4.15 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

evaṃ devo mahātmā sa pāvakaṃ puruṣo giran | yo vai taṃ puruṣaṃ veda tasyehātmā na riṣyate | yoginastaṃ prapaśyanti bhagavantaṃ sanātanam ||

Such is that great-souled god, the Person, who swallows the fire. Whoever knows that Person, his self is not harmed here. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Meaning today and context

There is a core in us that even fire cannot consume. Knowing it does not stop hardship, but it does keep a person from being destroyed by it inwardly.

Sanatsujata says this great god, the Person, swallows fire; whoever knows that Person is not harmed in his self here.
