Sanatsujatiya 4.18

4.18 Sanatsujata to Dhritarashtra

gūhanti sarpā iva gahvarāṇi svaśikṣayā svena vṛttena martyāḥ | teṣu pramuhyanti janā vimūḍhā yathādhvānaṃ mohayante bhayāya | yoginastaṃ prapaśyanti bhagavantaṃ sanātanam ||

As snakes hide in holes, mortals hide themselves behind their own learning and their own conduct. Foolish people are badly misled by them, as [those who] lead travellers astray on the road, to their danger. The yogins see that eternal Lord.

Meaning today and context

Polished learning and a pious manner can be a hiding place. Don't take outward show as proof of goodness, in others or in yourself; look at what people actually do.

Sanatsujata warns about hypocrisy: as snakes hide in holes, people hide themselves behind their training and conduct, and the naive are deceived by them as travellers are misled on the road into danger.
