Adhyāya 3, Brāhmaṇa 4

3.4.1 Yajnavalkya to Ushasta

atha hainamuṣastaścākrāyaṇaḥ papraccha | yājñavalkyeti hovāca yatsākṣādaparokṣādbrahma ya ātmā sarvāntarastaṃ me vyācakṣveti | eṣa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | yaḥ prāṇena prāṇiti sa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | yo'pānenāpāniti sa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | yo vyānena vyaniti sa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | ya udānenodaniti sa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | eṣa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ ||

Then Ushasta Cakrayana questioned him. 'Yajnavalkya,' he said, 'explain to me the Brahman that is present and not hidden, the Self that is within all.' 'This is your Self, which is within all. The one who breathes in with the in-breath is your Self within all. The one who breathes out with the out-breath is your Self within all. The one who breathes through with the diffused breath is your Self within all. The one who breathes up with the up-breath is your Self within all. This is your Self, which is within all.'

The breaths are named to point to the Self; this is not a breathing exercise or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

The deepest reality is not far away: it is the one who is breathing in you right now. Noticing that is a first step toward the Self.

Brihadaranyaka 3.4.1. Ushasta Cakrayana asks Yajnavalkya (the request is his) to explain the Brahman that is directly present, the Self within all; Yajnavalkya points to the one who breathes in every breath.

3.4.2 Yajnavalkya to Ushasta

sa hovācoṣastaścākrāyaṇaḥ yathā vai brūyādasau gaurasāvaśva ityevamevaitadvyapadiṣṭaṃ bhavati | yadeva sākṣādaparokṣādbrahma ya ātmā sarvāntarastaṃ me vyācakṣveti | eṣa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | katamo yājñavalkya sarvāntaraḥ | na dṛṣṭerdraṣṭāraṃ paśyeḥ | na śruteḥ śrotāraṃ śṛṇuyāḥ | na matermantāraṃ manvīthā | na vijñātervijñātāraṃ vijānīyāḥ | eṣa ta ātmā sarvāntaraḥ | ato'nyadārtam | tato hoṣastaścākrāyaṇa upararāma ||

Ushasta Cakrayana said: 'This is just pointing, as if one were to say "that is a cow, that is a horse". Explain to me the Brahman that is present and not hidden, the Self that is within all.' 'This is your Self, which is within all.' 'Which one, Yajnavalkya, is within all?' 'You cannot see the seer of seeing. You cannot hear the hearer of hearing. You cannot think the thinker of thinking. You cannot know the knower of knowing. This is your Self, which is within all. Everything other than this is suffering.' Then Ushasta Cakrayana fell silent.

Meaning today and context

Looking for your true self as one more object will always fail, because it is the one doing the looking. That restless search for 'who I am' among roles and feelings is what the verse calls suffering.

Brihadaranyaka 3.4.2. Ushasta (whose objection opens the unit) says that pointing is not explaining; Yajnavalkya answers that the seer of seeing cannot be seen, the knower of knowing cannot be known. Ushasta falls silent.
