3.3.1 Bhujyu to Yajnavalkya

Then Bhujyu Lahyayani questioned him. 'Yajnavalkya,' he said, 'we were wandering as students among the Madras, and came to the house of Patanchala Kapya. He had a daughter possessed by a gandharva. We asked him, "Who are you?" He said, "Sudhanvan Angirasa." When we were asking him about the ends of the worlds, we said to him, "Where have the Parikshitas gone?" So where have the Parikshitas gone? I ask you, Yajnavalkya: where have the Parikshitas gone?'

Meaning today and context

A riddle drawn from a strange encounter, posed to test whether Yajnavalkya knows what the spirit knew.

Brihadaranyaka 3.3.1. Bhujyu Lahyayani questions Yajnavalkya (the whole unit is his speech): he tells how, as a wandering student, he questioned a gandharva possessing a girl, and asks where the descendants of Parikshit have gone.

3.3.2 Yajnavalkya to Bhujyu

He said: 'He surely told you that they went to where the performers of the horse-sacrifice go.' 'And where do the performers of the horse-sacrifice go?' 'This world is thirty-two days' journey of the sun's chariot across. The earth surrounds it on all sides, twice as wide. The ocean surrounds the earth on all sides, twice as wide. Then there is a gap between, as narrow as the edge of a razor or the wing of a fly. Indra, becoming a bird, handed them to the wind; the wind, placing them within itself, carried them to where the performers of the horse-sacrifice were.' In this way he praised the wind alone. So the wind is each individual thing, and the wind is the totality. One who knows this wards off repeated death. Then Bhujyu Lahyayani fell silent.

This is ancient cosmology and story, not a literal map of the afterlife or a promise about the dead.

Meaning today and context

An ancient picture of the world and of where the dead go, ending in praise of the wind as the one in each and the whole.

Brihadaranyaka 3.3.2. Yajnavalkya answers Bhujyu (whose follow-up question is included): the Parikshitas went where performers of the horse-sacrifice go, carried by the wind beyond the edge of the world. Bhujyu then falls silent.
