Adhyāya 6, Khaṇḍa 16

6.16.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

puruṣaṃ somyota hastagṛhītamānayanti | apahārṣītsteyamakārṣītparaśumasmai tapateti | sa yadi tasya kartā bhavati tata evānṛtamātmānaṃ kurute | so'nṛtābhisaṃdho'nṛtenātmānamantardhāya paraśuṃ taptaṃ pratigṛhṇāti | sa dahyate | atha hanyate ||

"Dear one, they bring in a man held by the hand, saying, 'He has stolen, he has committed theft; heat the axe for him!' If he is the one who did it, then he makes himself false. Bent on falsehood, covering himself with falsehood, he grasps the heated axe. He is burned, and then he is put to death.

This describes an ancient trial by ordeal (holding a heated axe) as an illustration of truth; it is not a test anyone should ever perform, and not a model for punishing or accusing anyone. If you are falsely accused, seek legal help.

Meaning today and context

Lying does not just hide the truth; it turns us false inside, and that falseness is what finally burns us. A lie is a cover that cannot protect.

Chandogya 6.16.1: the last illustration: a man accused of theft is made to grasp a heated axe. If he is guilty, his falsehood covers him and he is burned and punished.

6.16.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

But if he is not the one who did it, then he makes himself true. Bent on truth, covering himself with truth, he grasps the heated axe. He is not burned, and he is released.

This describes an ancient trial by ordeal (holding a heated axe) as an illustration of truth; it is not a test anyone should ever perform, and not a model for punishing or accusing anyone. If you are falsely accused, seek legal help.

Meaning today and context

Holding to truth makes us whole; it is a protection that falsehood can never give. Standing by the truth when accused can be frightening, but it keeps us free inside.

Chandogya 6.16.2: but if the accused man is innocent, he makes himself true; covered by truth, he grasps the heated axe, is not burned, and is set free.

6.16.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

sa yathā tatra nādāhyeta | etadātmyamidaṃ sarvam | tatsatyam | sa ātmā | tattvamasi śvetaketo iti | taddhāsya vijajñāviti vijajñāviti ||

"Just as he would not be burned there, so this whole world has that as its self. That is the real. That is the Self. That you are, Shvetaketu." And he understood it from him; yes, he understood it.

Meaning today and context

The real self is identical with truth itself; to live by truth is to live as who we really are. The teaching ends not in argument but in a son finally understanding his father.

Chandogya 6.16.3: the close of Uddalaka's teaching: as the truthful man is not burned, so this whole world has the real as its self; tat tvam asi. The text ends: Shvetaketu understood it.
