7.1.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

adhīhi bhagava iti hopasasāda sanatkumāraṃ nāradaḥ | taṃ hovāca yadvettha tena mopasīda | tatasta ūrdhvaṃ vakṣyāmīti | sa hovāca ||

"Teach me, sir," said Nārada, approaching Sanatkumāra as a student. Sanatkumāra said to him: "Come to me with what you already know; then I will tell you what lies beyond it." Nārada said:

A good teacher starts from where the learner already stands. Before seeking something new, it helps to say honestly what we know and where it has left us.

Chandogya 7.1.1 opens the seventh chapter: Nārada approaches the sage Sanatkumāra as a student, and Sanatkumāra first asks him what he already knows.

7.1.2 Narada to Sanatkumara

"Sir, I have studied the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, and the Atharvaṇa as the fourth; the epics and ancient lore as the fifth Veda; the Veda of the Vedas (grammar); the rites for the ancestors; mathematics; the science of portents; the science of time; logic; ethics and polity; the lore of the gods; the knowledge of the Veda; the lore of spirits; the science of rulers and arms; astronomy; and the arts of serpents and celestial beings. This, sir, is what I have studied."

Nārada is the picture of someone with every qualification. The list is impressive, and the next passage shows it was not enough to free him from sorrow.

Chandogya 7.1.2: Nārada lists everything he has studied, from the four Vedas and the epics to grammar, mathematics, logic, astronomy and the arts.

7.1.3 Sanatkumara to Narada

so'haṃ bhagavo mantravidevāsmi nātmavit | śrutaṃ hyeva me bhagavaddṛśebhyastarati śokamātmaviditi | so'haṃ bhagavaḥ śocāmi | taṃ mā bhagavāñchokasya pāraṃ tārayatviti | taṃ hovāca yadvai kiṃcaitadadhyagīṣṭhā nāmaivaitat ||

"So I, sir, know only the texts; I do not know the Self. I have heard from people like you that one who knows the Self crosses beyond sorrow. And I, sir, am in sorrow. Please, sir, take me across to the other shore of sorrow." Sanatkumāra said to him: "Whatever you have studied is only name."

For someone in deep sorrow or despair, the verse honours asking for help; it is not a substitute for support. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Information about life is not the same as knowing oneself. Nārada's honesty, 'I know a great deal and still I grieve', is where real seeking begins, and asking for help is part of it.

Chandogya 7.1.3: Nārada confesses that for all his learning he knows only words, not the Self, and that he grieves; he asks to be taken across sorrow. Sanatkumāra replies that all he has studied is only name.

7.1.4 Sanatkumara to Narada

"The Ṛgveda is name, and so are the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda, the Atharvaṇa as the fourth, the epics and ancient lore as the fifth, grammar, the ancestral rites, mathematics, portents, the science of time, logic, ethics, the lore of the gods, of the Veda, of spirits, of rulers, of the stars, and of serpents and celestial beings. All this is only name. Revere name."

Meaning today and context

Labels and learned terms are real and useful, but they are the outermost layer. The teacher does not dismiss Nārada's learning; he places it as the first step on a ladder.

Chandogya 7.1.4: Sanatkumāra repeats Nārada's list and says every one of these sciences is only name, and asks him to revere name.

7.1.5 Sanatkumara to Narada

sa yo nāma brahmetyupāste | yāvannāmno gataṃ tatrāsya yathākāmacāro bhavati yo nāma brahmetyupāste | asti bhagavo nāmno bhūya iti | nāmno vāva bhūyo'stīti | tanme bhagavānbravītviti ||

"Whoever reveres name as Brahman, as far as name reaches, so far he moves as he wishes, whoever reveres name as Brahman." "Sir, is there anything greater than name?" "There is indeed something greater than name." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

Each thing we hold as ultimate gives us freedom only as far as its own reach. Nārada's question, 'is there something greater?', keeps him from settling too early.

Chandogya 7.1.5: Sanatkumāra gives the fruit of revering name as Brahman; Nārada asks if there is anything greater than name. This pattern of question and answer repeats at each step of the ladder.
