7.8.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Strength is greater than understanding. A single strong man makes a hundred men of understanding tremble. When a man is strong he rises up; rising, he serves; serving, he draws near (to a teacher); drawing near, he becomes one who sees, who hears, who reflects, who comprehends, who acts, who understands. By strength the earth stands, by strength the mid-air, by strength the sky, by strength the mountains, by strength gods and humans, by strength cattle and birds, grasses and trees, wild beasts down to worms, moths and ants. By strength the world stands. Revere strength."

'Strength' here is vitality and resolve, not force over others; the verse is not a licence to intimidate anyone.

Meaning today and context

Learning needs energy behind it. Without the strength to get up and show up, even a good mind stays idle; health and vitality are the ground on which study and service stand.

Chandogya 7.8.1: strength (bala) is greater than understanding; one strong person can shake a hundred learned ones, and only the strong rise, serve, sit near a teacher and come to see, hear and understand.

7.8.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

sa yo balamupāste | yāvadbalasya gataṃ tatrāsya yathākāmacāro bhavati yo balaṃ brahmetyupāste | asti bhagavo balādbhūya iti | balādvāva bhūyo'stīti | tanme bhagavānbravītviti ||

"Whoever reveres strength as Brahman, as far as strength reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than strength?" "There is indeed something greater than strength." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

Strength has its limits too; the next step shows what strength itself depends on.

Chandogya 7.8.2: the fruit of revering strength as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than strength.
