7.9.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

annaṃ vāva balādbhūyaḥ | tasmādyadyapi daśa rātrīrnāśnīyāt | yadyu ha jīvet | athavādraṣṭāśrotāmantāboddhākartāvijñātā bhavati | athānnasyāye draṣṭā bhavati śrotā bhavati mantā bhavati boddhā bhavati kartā bhavati vijñātā bhavati | annamupāssveti ||

"Food is greater than strength. That is why, if a person does not eat for ten nights, even if he stays alive, he becomes one who does not see, hear, reflect, comprehend, act or understand. But when food comes to him, he becomes one who sees, hears, reflects, comprehends, acts and understands. Revere food."

Not dietary or fasting advice; the verse in fact warns that going without food dulls every faculty. Seek medical advice before any fast.

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad is plain: the body must be fed for the mind to work. Caring for the body is not opposed to the spiritual life; it is its ground.

Chandogya 7.9.1: food is greater than strength; someone who goes without food for ten days may live, but can no longer see, hear, think or act, and these powers return when food comes back.

7.9.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Whoever reveres food as Brahman wins worlds rich in food and drink. As far as food reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than food?" "There is indeed something greater than food." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

Respect for food brings a life of plenty, yet food itself comes from something greater, as the next step says.

Chandogya 7.9.2: the fruit of revering food as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than food.
