"Water is greater than food. That is why, when there is not good rain, living beings fall sick, thinking, 'Food will be scarce.' But when there is good rain, living beings are glad, thinking, 'There will be plenty of food.' It is water that has taken these forms: this earth, the mid-air, the sky, the mountains, gods and humans, cattle and birds, grasses and trees, wild beasts down to worms, moths and ants. All these are water given form. Revere water."

Meaning today and context

Our moods and wellbeing depend on things far beyond us, like the rains. Seeing that dependence plainly can make us humbler and more grateful.

Chandogya 7.10.1: water is greater than food; when the rains fail, living beings fall sick with worry that food will be scarce, and all forms, from earth to insects, are water given shape.

7.10.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Whoever reveres water as Brahman obtains all his desires and becomes satisfied. As far as water reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than water?" "There is indeed something greater than water." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

There is a play on words: āpaḥ (water) and āpnoti (obtains). Satisfaction is promised, yet the seeker still asks for more than satisfaction.

Chandogya 7.10.2: the fruit of revering water as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than water.
