"Heat is greater than water. For it is heat that, seizing hold of the wind, warms the sky. Then people say, 'It is sultry, it is burning hot, it will rain.' Heat shows itself first and then pours out water. And with lightning flashing upward and across, thunderclaps roll; so people say, 'There is lightning, there is thunder, it will rain.' Heat shows itself first and then pours out water. Revere heat."

Meaning today and context

This is the ancient observation of how heat and lightning come before the monsoon. It reminds us that each thing in nature rests on something prior to it.

Chandogya 7.11.1: heat or fire (tejas) is greater than water, since heat seizing the wind warms the sky before rain, and lightning and thunder come before the rain.

"Whoever reveres heat as Brahman becomes radiant and wins radiant, shining worlds from which darkness has been driven away. As far as heat reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than heat?" "There is indeed something greater than heat." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

Radiance and vigour are real goods, but the seeker does not stop even at brilliance.

Chandogya 7.11.2: the fruit of revering heat as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than heat.
