7.12.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

ākāśo vāva tejaso bhūyān | ākāśe vai sūryācandramasāvubhau vidyunnakṣatrāṇyagniḥ | ākāśenāhvāyati | ākāśena sṛṇoti | ākāśena pratisṛṇoti | ākāśe ramate | ākāśe na ramate | ākāśe jāyate | ākāśamabhijāyate | ākāśamupāssveti ||

"Space is greater than heat. In space are both the sun and the moon, lightning, the stars and fire. Through space one calls out; through space one hears; through space one hears in reply. In space one delights; in space one does not delight. In space one is born; towards space one grows. Revere space."

Meaning today and context

Space is what holds everything, joy and sorrow alike, without being touched by either. It is a natural image for a mind that has room for whatever comes.

Chandogya 7.12.1: space (ākāśa) is greater than heat; sun, moon, lightning, stars and fire all lie within space, and in space we call, hear, rejoice, are born and grow.

7.12.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Whoever reveres space as Brahman wins worlds that are spacious, full of light, unconfined and wide-ranging. As far as space reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than space?" "There is indeed something greater than space." "Then tell me that, sir."

A spacious outlook makes life feel less cramped. Surprisingly, the next step names memory as greater still.

Chandogya 7.12.2: the fruit of revering space as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than space.
