Adhyāya 7, Khaṇḍa 13

7.13.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

smaro vāvākāśādbhūyaḥ | tasmādyadyapi bahava āsīranna smaranto naiva te kaṃcana śṛṇuyurna manvīranna vijānīran | yadā vāva te smareyuratha śṛṇuyuratha manvīrannatha vijānīran | smareṇa vai putrānvijānāti smareṇa paśūn | smaramupāssveti ||

"Memory is greater than space. That is why, even if many were sitting together, if they had no memory they would hear nothing, think nothing, understand nothing. But when they remember, then they hear, then they think, then they understand. By memory one recognises one's sons; by memory one's cattle. Revere memory."

For someone whose loved one is losing memory, the verse describes a faculty, not a person's worth; a person with dementia remains fully worthy of love and care.

Meaning today and context

Without memory there is no recognition of anyone, not even our own children. Memory is what lets experience add up into a life and relationships.

Chandogya 7.13.1: memory (smara) is greater than space; people gathered together who do not remember could neither hear, think nor understand anything, and by memory one recognises one's children and cattle.

7.13.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

sa yaḥ smaraṃ brahmetyupāste | yāvatsmarasya gataṃ tatrāsya yathākāmacāro bhavati yaḥ smaraṃ brahmetyupāste | asti bhagavaḥ smarādbhūya iti | smarādvāva bhūyo'stīti | tanme bhagavānbravītviti ||

"Whoever reveres memory as Brahman, as far as memory reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than memory?" "There is indeed something greater than memory." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

Memory looks back; the next step, hope, looks forward and moves memory into action.

Chandogya 7.13.2: the fruit of revering memory as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than memory.
