7.14.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

āśā vāva smarādbhūyasī | āśeddho vai smaro mantrānadhīte karmāṇi kurute putrāṃśca paśūṃścecchata imaṃ ca lokaṃ amuṃ cecchate | āśāmupāssveti ||

"Hope is greater than memory. Kindled by hope, memory learns the sacred texts, does works, desires sons and cattle, and desires this world and the next. Revere hope."

Meaning today and context

Knowledge and memory lie still until hope sets them alight. When we feel stuck, what is often missing is not information but something to hope for.

Chandogya 7.14.1: hope or aspiration (āśā) is greater than memory; kindled by hope, memory sets one studying, working and wishing for family and for this world and the next.

7.14.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Whoever reveres hope as Brahman, all his desires prosper through hope, and his prayers do not fail. As far as hope reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than hope?" "There is something greater than hope." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

Hope makes our wishes fruitful, but hope too rests on something: the next step names life itself, prāṇa.

Chandogya 7.14.2: the fruit of revering hope as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than hope.
