Adhyāya 7, Khaṇḍa 15

7.15.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

प्राणो वाव आशाया भूयान् । यथा वा अरा नाभौ समर्पिता एवमस्मिन्प्राणे सर्वं समर्पितम् । प्राणः प्राणेन याति । प्राणः प्राणं ददाति । प्राणाय ददाति । प्राणो ह पिता । प्राणो माता । प्राणो भ्राता । प्राणः स्वसा । प्राण आचार्यः । प्राणो ब्राह्मणः ॥

prāṇo vāva āśāyā bhūyān | yathā vā arā nābhau samarpitā evamasminprāṇe sarvaṃ samarpitam | prāṇaḥ prāṇena yāti | prāṇaḥ prāṇaṃ dadāti | prāṇāya dadāti | prāṇo ha pitā | prāṇo mātā | prāṇo bhrātā | prāṇaḥ svasā | prāṇa ācāryaḥ | prāṇo brāhmaṇaḥ ||

"Breath (life) is greater than hope. Just as the spokes are fastened to the hub, so everything is fastened to this breath. Breath moves by breath; breath gives breath; it gives to breath. Breath is father; breath is mother; breath is brother; breath is sister; breath is teacher; breath is brahmin."

"प्राण आशा से बड़ा है। जैसे पहिये के आरे नाभि में जुड़े रहते हैं, वैसे ही सब कुछ इस प्राण में जुड़ा है। प्राण प्राण से चलता है; प्राण प्राण को देता है; प्राण के लिए देता है। प्राण ही पिता है, प्राण ही माता है, प्राण ही भाई है, प्राण ही बहन है, प्राण ही आचार्य है, प्राण ही ब्राह्मण है।"

'Brahmin' here names a respected role (one learned in the Veda); worth comes from conduct and learning, never birth. Not breathing advice.

यहाँ 'ब्राह्मण' एक सम्मानित भूमिका (वेद के ज्ञाता) का नाम है; सम्मान आचरण और विद्या से है, जन्म से कभी नहीं। यह श्वास-अभ्यास की सलाह नहीं है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Every relationship we have, with parents, siblings, teachers, is a relationship with a living being. Life is the hub to which all our roles and bonds are attached.

माता-पिता, भाई-बहन, गुरु, हमारा हर संबंध एक जीवित प्राणी से संबंध है। जीवन ही वह धुरी है जिससे हमारी सारी भूमिकाएँ और बंधन जुड़े हैं।

Chandogya 7.15.1: life-breath (prāṇa) is greater than hope; as spokes are fixed in a hub, all is fixed in prāṇa, and prāṇa is father, mother, brother, sister, teacher and brahmin.

7.15.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

स यदि पितरं वा मातरं वा भ्रातरं वा स्वसारं वाचार्यं वा ब्राह्मणं वा किंचिद्भृशमिव प्रत्याह । धिक्त्वास्त्वित्येवैनमाहुः । पितृहा वै त्वमसि मातृहा वै त्वमसि भ्रातृहा वै त्वमसि स्वसृहा वै त्वमस्याचार्यहा वै त्वमसि ब्राह्मणहा वै त्वमसीति ॥

sa yadi pitaraṃ vā mātaraṃ vā bhrātaraṃ vā svasāraṃ vācāryaṃ vā brāhmaṇaṃ vā kiṃcidbhṛśamiva pratyāha | dhiktvāstvityevainamāhuḥ | pitṛhā vai tvamasi mātṛhā vai tvamasi bhrātṛhā vai tvamasi svasṛhā vai tvamasyācāryahā vai tvamasi brāhmaṇahā vai tvamasīti ||

"If a person says something harsh to his father or mother, brother or sister, teacher or a brahmin, people say to him, 'Shame on you! You are a killer of your father, a killer of your mother, a killer of your brother, a killer of your sister, a killer of your teacher, a killer of a brahmin.'"

"यदि कोई अपने पिता, माता, भाई, बहन, आचार्य या ब्राह्मण को कुछ कठोर उत्तर दे, तो लोग उससे कहते हैं, 'तुम्हें धिक्कार है! तुम पितृघाती हो, मातृघाती हो, भ्रातृघाती हो, भगिनीघाती हो, आचार्यघाती हो, ब्राह्मणघाती हो।'"

The idiom is meant to show the weight of words, not to shame anyone in crisis. Respect for elders never means accepting abuse; for abuse, 112 / 181. 'Brahmin' means one learned and respected, never a rank by birth.

यह मुहावरा शब्दों का भार दिखाने के लिए है, संकट में किसी को लज्जित करने के लिए नहीं। बड़ों का सम्मान करने का अर्थ दुर्व्यवहार सहना नहीं है; दुर्व्यवहार में 112 / 181 पर संपर्क करें। 'ब्राह्मण' का अर्थ विद्वान और सम्मानित है, जन्म से कोई ऊँचा पद नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Harsh words to the living wound them, and the old idiom treats such speech almost as violence. How we speak to family and teachers while they are alive matters deeply.

जीवितों से कहे गए कठोर शब्द उन्हें घायल करते हैं, और पुरानी कहावत ऐसी वाणी को लगभग हिंसा मानती है। परिवार और गुरुजनों से, जब तक वे जीवित हैं, हम कैसे बोलते हैं, यह बहुत मायने रखता है।

Chandogya 7.15.2: Sanatkumāra illustrates prāṇa: if someone answers a living father, mother, brother, sister, teacher or brahmin harshly, people say 'Shame on you; you are a killer of your father…'.

7.15.3 Sanatkumara to Narada

अथ यद्यप्येनानुत्क्रान्तप्राणाञ्छूलेन समासं व्यतिषंदहेत् । नैवैनं ब्रूयुः पितृहासीति न मातृहासीति न भ्रातृहासीति न स्वसृहासीति नाचार्यहासीति न ब्राह्मणहासीति ॥

atha yadyapyenānutkrāntaprāṇāñchūlena samāsaṃ vyatiṣaṃdahet | naivainaṃ brūyuḥ pitṛhāsīti na mātṛhāsīti na bhrātṛhāsīti na svasṛhāsīti nācāryahāsīti na brāhmaṇahāsīti ||

"But once the breath has left them, even if he were to heap them together with a poker and burn them up completely, no one would say to him, 'You are a killer of your father', or 'of your mother', or 'of your brother', or 'of your sister', or 'of your teacher', or 'of a brahmin'."

"पर जब उनके प्राण निकल जाते हैं, तब यदि वह उन्हें शूल (सलाख) से इकट्ठा करके पूरी तरह जला भी दे, तो कोई उससे यह नहीं कहता कि 'तुम पितृघाती हो', न 'मातृघाती', न 'भ्रातृघाती', न 'भगिनीघाती', न 'आचार्यघाती', न 'ब्राह्मणघाती'।"

For someone grieving, the verse describes the funeral rite to point to life as what we honour; it does not dismiss the loss or the love for the one who died. Tele-MANAS 14416.

शोक में व्यक्ति के लिए: यह मंत्र अंत्येष्टि का वर्णन करके जीवन की ओर संकेत करता है; यह न हानि को नकारता है, न दिवंगत के प्रति प्रेम को। टेली-मानस 14416।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The point is that what we honour in a person is the living presence in them. The verse describes the ordinary funeral rite to make that point, not to make light of death.

अर्थ यह है कि किसी व्यक्ति में हम जिसका आदर करते हैं, वह उसमें बसा जीवन है। यह बात समझाने के लिए मंत्र सामान्य अंत्येष्टि का वर्णन करता है, मृत्यु को हल्का दिखाने के लिए नहीं।

Chandogya 7.15.3: by contrast, once life has left these same people, someone may pile up their bodies with a spike and burn them on the funeral pyre, and no one calls him a killer.

7.15.4 Sanatkumara to Narada

प्राणो ह्येवैतानि सर्वाणि भवति । स वा एष एवं पश्यन्नेवं मन्वान एवं विजानन्नतिवादी भवति । तं चेद्ब्रूयुरतिवाद्यसीति । अतिवाद्यस्मीति ब्रूयात् । नापह्नुवीत ॥

"For breath is all these. One who sees this, thinks this, understands this becomes one who speaks beyond (an ativādin). If people say to him, 'You speak beyond', he should say, 'I do speak beyond'; he should not deny it."

"क्योंकि प्राण ही ये सब बन जाता है। जो ऐसा देखता है, ऐसा मनन करता है, ऐसा जानता है, वह अतिवादी (सबसे बढ़कर बोलने वाला) होता है। यदि लोग उससे कहें, 'तुम अतिवादी हो', तो वह कहे, 'हाँ, मैं अतिवादी हूँ'; वह इसे नकारे नहीं।"

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Knowing that life is the hub of everything gives a kind of confidence in speech. But the teacher immediately points higher: the real 'superior speaker' speaks from truth.

यह जानना कि जीवन ही सबकी धुरी है, वाणी को एक तरह का आत्मविश्वास देता है। पर गुरु तुरंत और ऊपर संकेत करते हैं: सच्चा 'अतिवादी' वह है जो सत्य से बोलता है।

Chandogya 7.15.4: prāṇa is all these; one who sees, thinks and understands this becomes a 'superior speaker' (ativādin) and should not deny it if told so. The next khaṇḍa will say that true superiority is speaking by truth.
