7.16.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

eṣa tu vā ativadati yaḥ satyenātivadati | so'haṃ bhagavaḥ satyenātivadānīti | satyaṃ tveva vijijñāsitavyamiti | satyaṃ bhagavo vijijñāsa iti ||

"But he truly speaks beyond who speaks beyond by truth." "Sir, let me speak beyond by truth." "But it is truth itself that one must seek to understand." "Sir, I seek to understand truth."

Meaning today and context

Speaking with authority is worth something only when it comes from truth. Wanting to be truthful begins with wanting to understand what is actually true.

Chandogya 7.16.1: Sanatkumāra says the true ativādin is the one who speaks beyond by truth; Nārada wants to be such a person, and is told that truth itself must be sought to be understood. Here the ladder changes: each step now depends on the next.
