Having taught the Veda, the teacher instructs the student: Speak the truth. Practise dharma. Do not neglect your study. Having given the teacher the wealth he values, do not cut off the line of your descendants. Do not swerve from truth. Do not swerve from dharma. Do not neglect your well-being. Do not neglect prosperity. Do not neglect study and teaching.
'Do not cut off the line of descendants' reflects the householder ideal of its time; it is not pressure on anyone to marry or have children, and not having children is no failing.

Advice for anyone leaving school or starting out: be truthful, do what is right, keep learning, and also look after your own well-being and livelihood. The teacher sees no conflict between integrity and a prosperous life.
Taittirīya 1.11.1: the convocation address. Having taught the Veda, the teacher gives the departing student his final instructions for life: speak the truth, practise dharma, never neglect study.
Do not neglect your duties to the gods and the ancestors. Let your mother be a god to you. Let your father be a god to you. Let your teacher be a god to you. Let your guest be a god to you. Do those deeds that are blameless, and not others. Whatever good conduct you see in us, follow that,
Honouring parents and teachers does not mean accepting abuse or harm from them; the verse itself asks you to follow only what is good. For abuse, call 112, the women's helpline 181, or Childline 1098.

Treat parents, teachers and guests with the reverence you would give the divine. Yet even the teacher says: copy only what is good in us, not everything we do. Respect does not mean switching off your own judgement.
Taittirīya 1.11.2, the teacher's farewell continued: honour mother, father, teacher and guest as gods; do only blameless deeds; follow only the good in your teachers' conduct.
no itarāṇi | ye ke cārumacchreyāṃso brāhmaṇāḥ | teṣāṃ tvayāsanena praśvasitavyam | śraddhayā deyam | aśraddhayādeyam | śriyā deyam | hriyā deyam | bhiyā deyam | saṃvidā deyam | atha yadi te karmavicikitsā vā vṛttavicikitsā vā syāt ||
and not the rest. Whenever brāhmaṇas better than us come, you should refresh them by offering a seat. Give with faith. Do not give without faith. Give generously. Give with modesty. Give with awe. Give with understanding. Now, if you are ever in doubt about what to do, or in doubt about how to conduct yourself,
'Brāhmaṇas' here means the learned and good, by conduct and learning, never by birth; it is never a reason to rank or exclude anyone. Giving is not financial advice; give within your means.
Meaning today and context
Giving is not just handing something over: give with faith, generously, without showing off, mindful that it may not be enough, and with real understanding of the other person. Welcome those who know more than you.
Taittirīya 1.11.3, the farewell continued: honour those wiser than us, and how to give: with faith, generously, modestly, with care and understanding. It then turns to what to do when in doubt.
ye tatra brāhmaṇāḥ saṃmarśinaḥ | yuktā āyuktāḥ | alūkṣā dharmakāmāḥ syuḥ | yathā te tatra varteran | tathā tatra vartethāḥ | athābhyākhyāteṣu | ye tatra brāhmaṇāḥ saṃmarśinaḥ | yuktā āyuktāḥ | alūkṣā dharmakāmāḥ syuḥ | yathā te teṣu varteran | tathā teṣu vartethāḥ | eṣa ādeśaḥ | eṣa upadeśaḥ | eṣā vedopaniṣat | etadanuśāsanam | evamupāsitavyam | evamu caitadupāsyam ||
then, as the brāhmaṇas there who are thoughtful, devoted, acting of their own accord, not harsh, and lovers of dharma would act in that case, so should you act. And regarding those who are accused of wrongdoing: as the brāhmaṇas there who are thoughtful, devoted, acting of their own accord, not harsh, and lovers of dharma would behave toward them, so should you behave toward them. This is the command. This is the teaching. This is the secret of the Veda. This is the instruction. So should you live; so indeed should this be lived.
'Brāhmaṇas' here means wise and good people, by conduct and learning, never by birth.
Meaning today and context
When you don't know what is right, look to people who are thoughtful, gentle and sincerely good, and do as they would. The same with someone under accusation: don't follow the crowd's harshness; treat them as the fair-minded would.
Taittirīya 1.11.4 ends the farewell: when in doubt about what is right, or about how to treat someone accused of wrong, follow the example of thoughtful, devoted, gentle people who love dharma. This, the teacher says, is the whole instruction.
