Śikṣā Vallī, Anuvāka 6

1.6.1 Upanishadic seer

sa ya eṣo'ntarahṛdaya ākāśaḥ | tasminnayaṃ puruṣo manomayaḥ | amṛto hiraṇmayaḥ | antareṇa tāluke | ya eṣa stana ivāvalaṃbate | sendrayoniḥ | yatrāsau keśānto vivartate | vyapohya śīrṣakapāle | bhūrityagnau pratitiṣṭhati | bhuva iti vāyau ||

This space within the heart: in it is this person made of mind, immortal, golden. Between the two palates hangs that which is like a nipple: that is the birthplace of Indra. Where the roots of the hair part, it splits open the skull and passes through; then, as bhūḥ, he is established in fire; as bhuvaḥ, in wind;

This describes the knower's passage at death and a traditional meditation; it is not a physical practice, and never a reason to harm the body or seek death. If you are thinking about death, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse places the luminous, immortal person in the space of one's own heart. Whatever one makes of the mystical path described, its first claim is that what we seek is within.

Taittirīya 1.6.1: the person made of mind dwells in the space within the heart; the text describes the path by which the knower rises through the crown of the head and becomes established in fire, wind, sun and Brahman.

1.6.2 Upanishadic seer

suvarityāditye | maha iti brahmaṇi | āpnoti svārājyam | āpnoti manasaspatim | vākpatiścakṣuṣpatiḥ | śrotrapatirvijñānapatiḥ | etattato bhavati | ākāśaśarīraṃ brahma | satyātma prāṇārāmaṃ mana ānandam | śānti samṛddhamamṛtam | iti prācīnayogyopāssva ||

as suvaḥ, in the sun; as mahaḥ, in Brahman. He attains self-rule. He reaches the lord of the mind; he becomes lord of speech, lord of sight, lord of hearing, lord of understanding. Then he becomes this: Brahman whose body is space, whose self is truth, whose delight is life, whose mind is bliss, full of peace, immortal. Meditate on it thus, Prācīnayogya.

Meaning today and context

Real freedom here is self-rule: being master of one's own mind, speech, eyes and ears instead of being pulled about by them. The goal is described as truth, bliss and peace, not power over others.

Taittirīya 1.6.2 completes the passage: the knower gains self-rule, mastery over mind and senses, and becomes Brahman, whose body is space and whose mind is bliss. The teacher tells Prācīnayogya to meditate so.
