Śikṣā Vallī, Anuvāka 5

1.5.1 Upanishadic seer

bhūrbhuvaḥ suvariti vā etāstisro vyāhṛtayaḥ | tāsāmu ha smaitāṃ caturthīm | māhācamasyaḥ pravedayate | maha iti | tatbrahma | sa ātmā | aṅgānyanyā devatāḥ | bhūriti vā ayaṃ lokaḥ | bhuva ityantarikṣam | suvarityasau lokaḥ ||

Bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, suvaḥ: these are the three sacred utterances. Māhācamasya made known a fourth among them: mahaḥ. That is Brahman; that is the trunk; the other gods are its limbs. Bhūḥ is this world; bhuvaḥ the middle region; suvaḥ the world beyond;

Meaning today and context

Beneath the many parts there is one centre that holds them together. The Upanishad trains attention to find that centre in every set of things.

Taittirīya 1.5.1: the three sacred utterances bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, suvaḥ, and a fourth, mahaḥ, taught by the sage Māhācamasya as Brahman, the trunk of which the gods are limbs.

1.5.2 Upanishadic seer

maha ityādityaḥ | ādityena vāva sarve loka mahīyante | bhūriti vā agniḥ | bhuva iti vāyuḥ | suvarityādityaḥ | maha iti candramāḥ | candramasā vāva sarvāṇi jyotiṃṣi mahīyante | bhūriti vā ṛcaḥ | bhuva iti sāmāni | suvariti yajūṃṣi ||

mahaḥ is the sun, for by the sun all the worlds are made great. Bhūḥ is fire; bhuvaḥ is wind; suvaḥ is the sun; mahaḥ is the moon, for by the moon all the lights are made great. Bhūḥ is the Ṛg verses; bhuvaḥ the Sāman chants; suvaḥ the Yajus formulas;

Meaning today and context

In each group, one member gives greatness to the rest, as the sun lights the worlds. It invites us to notice what in our own life gives the rest its meaning.

Taittirīya 1.5.2 continues the meditation on the four utterances, mapping them onto the worlds, the lights and the Vedas.

1.5.3 Upanishadic seer

maha iti brahma | brahmaṇā vāva sarve vedā mahīyante | bhūriti vai prāṇaḥ | bhuva ityapānaḥ | suvariti vyānaḥ | maha ityannam | annena vāva sarve prāṇa mahīyante | tā vā etāścatasraścaturdha | catasraścatasro vyāhṛtayaḥ | tā yo veda | sa veda brahma | sarve'smai devā balimāvahanti ||

mahaḥ is Brahman, for by Brahman all the Vedas are made great. Bhūḥ is the in-breath; bhuvaḥ the out-breath; suvaḥ the diffused breath; mahaḥ is food, for by food all the breaths are made great. These four are each fourfold: four and four are the utterances. Whoever knows them knows Brahman. All the gods bring offerings to him.

The breaths here are objects of meditation, not breathing exercises or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Even breath depends on food, and all learning on its living source. Seeing what sustains what is a step toward seeing the one reality behind it all.

Taittirīya 1.5.3 ends the meditation on the four utterances (the Veda, the breaths) and promises that one who knows them knows Brahman.
