"Bring a banyan fig from over there." "Here it is, sir." "Split it." "It is split, sir." "What do you see in it?" "These seeds, sir, very tiny ones." "Now, son, split one of them." "It is split, sir." "What do you see in it?" "Nothing at all, sir."

The source of something great is often invisible. 'Nothing at all' is where a whole tree comes from, so what we cannot see is not therefore unreal.
Chandogya 6.12.1: the banyan seed illustration. Uddalaka has Shvetaketu split a banyan fig and then one of its tiny seeds, and asks what he sees inside.

He said to him: "Dear one, this finest essence that you cannot perceive, it is from this very finest essence that this great banyan stands. Have faith, dear one."

Some truths cannot be seen directly at first; they have to be trusted long enough to be understood. Faith here is not blind belief but staying open while understanding grows.
Chandogya 6.12.2: Uddalaka explains the seed: from the subtle essence Shvetaketu cannot perceive, the great banyan stands. He asks his son to have faith.

"That which is this finest essence: this whole world has it as its self. That is the real. That is the Self. That you are, Shvetaketu." "Sir, teach me still more." "So be it, dear one," he said.

The invisible essence in the seed holds the whole tree; the same unseen reality is your own self. You are not as small as you feel.
Chandogya 6.12.3: the 'tat tvam asi' refrain closes the banyan seed illustration; Shvetaketu asks for more.
