"Put this salt in water and come to me in the morning." He did so. His father said to him, "The salt you put in the water last night, bring it here, son." He felt for it but could not find it,

Something can be fully present and still impossible to grasp with the hand. Not finding it the usual way does not mean it is not there.
Chandogya 6.13.1: the salt illustration. Uddalaka has Shvetaketu put salt in water overnight; in the morning the son cannot find it.

"Throw it away and come to me." He did so, saying, "It is always there." His father said to him, "In the same way, dear one, you do not perceive Being here, yet it is right here."

What we seek is not hidden far away; like salt in water it is in every part of our experience, known not by grasping but by tasting. A quieter, more direct attention can find it.
Chandogya 6.13.2: Uddalaka has his son sip the water from the top, middle and bottom: it is salty everywhere. Being, he says, is likewise right here though unseen.

"That which is this finest essence: this whole world has it as its self. That is the real. That is the Self. That you are, Shvetaketu." "Sir, teach me still more." "So be it, dear one," he said.

As the salt pervades every drop, the one reality pervades all, and that reality is you. You need not go searching elsewhere for what you are.
Chandogya 6.13.3: the 'tat tvam asi' refrain closes the salt illustration; Shvetaketu asks for more.
