6.11.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

asya somya mahato vṛkṣasya yo mūle'bhyāhanyājjīvansravedyo madhye'bhyāhanyājjīvansravedyo'gre'bhyāhanyājjīvansravet | sa eṣa jīvenātmanānuprabhūtaḥ pepīyamāno modamānastiṣṭhati ||

"Dear one, if someone were to strike this great tree at its root, it would bleed sap but live; if at its middle, it would bleed sap but live; if at its top, it would bleed sap but live. Pervaded by the living self, it stands drinking in its nourishment and flourishing.

Meaning today and context

Life can be wounded and still go on, because what makes it alive runs through the whole of it. We too can be hurt in many places and still stand.

Chandogya 6.11.1: Uddalaka's third illustration: a great tree struck anywhere bleeds sap yet lives, because the living self pervades it.

6.11.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

asya yadekāṃ śākhāṃ jīvo jahātyatha sā śuṣyati | dvitīyāṃ jahātyatha sā śuṣyati | tṛtīyāṃ jahātyatha sā śuṣyati | sarvaṃ jahāti sarvaḥ śuṣyati ||

If the life leaves one branch of it, that branch dries up; if it leaves a second, that dries up; if it leaves a third, that dries up. If it leaves the whole, the whole tree dries up.

If you are grieving: this passage speaks of the Self that does not die; it does not ask you to stop mourning or to hurry past the loss. If thoughts of death trouble you, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The body lives only while life is in it. What we call death is the life leaving the form, not the life itself coming to an end.

Chandogya 6.11.2: continuing the tree illustration: whichever branch the life leaves dries up; when it leaves the whole tree, the whole tree dries up.

6.11.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

evameva khalu somya viddhīti ha uvāca | jīvāpetaṃ vāva kiledaṃ mriyate na jīvo mriyata iti | sa ya eṣo'ṇimaitadātmyamidaṃ sarvam | tatsatyam | sa ātmā | tattvamasi śvetaketo iti | bhūya eva mā bhagavānvijñāpayatviti | tathā somyeti hovāca ||

"Know it to be just like that, dear one," he said. "This body, indeed, dies when the living self has left it; the living self does not die. That which is this finest essence: this whole world has it as its self. That is the real. That is the Self. That you are, Shvetaketu." "Sir, teach me still more." "So be it, dear one," he said.

The Upanishad's plain claim is that the body dies but what lives in it does not. For someone facing death, their own or another's, it offers a way of seeing a person as more than the failing body.

Chandogya 6.11.3: Uddalaka draws the lesson of the tree: the body dies when life leaves it, but the living self does not die. Then the 'tat tvam asi' refrain.
