Adhyāya 7, Khaṇḍa 3

7.3.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

mano vāva vāco bhūyaḥ | yathā vai dve vāmalake dve vā kole dvau vākṣau muṣṭiranubhavatyevaṃ vācaṃ ca nāma ca mano'nubhavati | sa yadā manasā manasyati mantrānadhīyīyetyathādhīte | karmāṇi kurvīyetyatha kurute | putrāṃśca paśūṃśceccheyetyathecchate | imaṃ ca lokamamuṃ ceccheyetyathecchate | mano hyātmā | mano hi lokaḥ | mano hi brahma | mana upāssveti ||

"Mind is greater than speech. Just as a closed fist holds two āmalaka fruits, or two jujubes, or two dice, so the mind holds both speech and name. When one thinks in the mind, 'Let me learn the texts', then one learns them; 'Let me do these works', then one does them; 'Let me have sons and cattle', then one desires them; 'Let me have this world and the next', then one desires them. Mind indeed is the self; mind is the world; mind is Brahman. Revere mind."

Meaning today and context

Everything we say and do begins as a thought. Paying attention to the mind, where wanting and doing start, matters more than polishing words.

Chandogya 7.3.1: mind is greater than speech; as a closed fist holds two small fruits, the mind holds both speech and name, and every intention to study, act or desire starts in it.

7.3.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

sa yo mano brahmetyupāste | yāvanmanaso gataṃ tatrāsya yathākāmacāro bhavati yo mano brahmetyupāste | asti bhagavo manaso bhūya iti | manaso vāva bhūyo'stīti | tanme bhagavānbravītviti ||

"Whoever reveres mind as Brahman, as far as mind reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than mind?" "There is indeed something greater than mind." "Then tell me that, sir."

Even the thinking mind is not the last word. The seeker keeps asking what lies beneath thought.

Chandogya 7.3.2: the fruit of revering mind as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than mind.
