7.4.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

saṃkalpo vāva manaso bhūyān | yadā vai saṃkalpayate'tha manasyati | atha vācamīrayati | tāmu nāmnīrayati | nāmni mantrā ekaṃ bhavanti | mantreṣu karmāṇi ||

"Intention is greater than mind. For when one forms an intention, then one thinks; then one sends forth speech, and one sends it forth in name. In name the sacred texts become one, and in the texts, the rites."

Meaning today and context

Behind our thinking there is a deeper act of will that sets the direction. Noticing what we have actually resolved on explains much of what we think and say.

Chandogya 7.4.1: resolve or intention (saṃkalpa) is greater than mind; first one resolves, then thinks, then speaks, and speech takes shape in names, in which texts and rites are contained.

7.4.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

"All these converge in intention, have intention as their self, are established in intention. Heaven and earth took form through intention; wind and space took form; water and fire took form. Through their forming, rain takes form; through the forming of rain, food takes form; through the forming of food, the breaths take form; through the forming of the breaths, the sacred texts take form; through the forming of the texts, the rites take form; through the forming of the rites, the world takes form; through the forming of the world, everything takes form. Such is intention. Revere intention."

Meaning today and context

The passage pictures the world as a chain where each thing comes into being through another. Our own lives too take shape link by link from what we set our will on.

Chandogya 7.4.2: Sanatkumāra shows the whole world held together by intention, from heaven and earth to rain, food, life, ritual and the world itself, playing on the word saṃkalpa (to form, to be formed).

7.4.3 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Whoever reveres intention as Brahman wins worlds that are well formed; himself steadfast, he wins steadfast worlds; himself firmly based, firmly based worlds; himself untroubled, untroubled worlds. As far as intention reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than intention?" "There is indeed something greater than intention." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

A steady person builds a steady world around them; an unshaken resolve creates conditions that do not shake easily.

Chandogya 7.4.3: the fruit of revering intention as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than intention.
