Adhyāya 7, Khaṇḍa 5

7.5.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

cittaṃ vāva saṃkalpādbhūyaḥ | yadā vai cetayate'tha saṃkalpayate | atha manasyati | atha vācamīrayati | tāmu nāmnīrayati | nāmni mantrā ekaṃ bhavanti | mantreṣu karmāṇi ||

"Awareness is greater than intention. For when one becomes aware, then one forms an intention; then one thinks; then one sends forth speech, and sends it forth in name. In name the sacred texts become one, and in the texts, the rites."

Meaning today and context

Before we decide anything, we first have to notice what is in front of us. Good intentions depend on clear awareness of the situation.

Chandogya 7.5.1: awareness or attentiveness (citta) is greater than intention; one first takes notice, then resolves, then thinks and speaks.

7.5.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

tāni ha vā etāni cittaikāyanāni cittātmāni citte pratiṣṭhitāni | tasmādyadyapi bahuvidacitto bhavati nāyamastītyevainamāhuḥ | yadayaṃ veda yadvā ayaṃ vidvānnetthamacittaḥ syāditi | atha yadyalpaviccittavānbhavati tasmā evota śuśrūṣante | cittaṃ hyevaiṣāmekāyanam | cittamātmā | cittaṃ pratiṣṭhā | cittamupāssveti ||

"All these converge in awareness, have awareness as their self, are established in awareness. That is why, even if a person knows a great deal but is without awareness, people say of him, 'He is nobody. Whatever he may know, if he really knew, he would not be so unaware.' But if a person of little learning is aware, people want to listen to him. For awareness is what these all converge in; awareness is the self; awareness is the foundation. Revere awareness."

Meaning today and context

Knowing a lot is not the same as being present. People trust someone who is attentive and grounded more than someone who only has facts.

Chandogya 7.5.2: Sanatkumāra observes that a learned person who lacks awareness is treated as nobody, while one of little learning who is attentive is listened to.

7.5.3 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Whoever reveres awareness as Brahman wins worlds full of awareness; himself steadfast, he wins steadfast worlds; himself firmly based, firmly based worlds; himself untroubled, untroubled worlds. As far as awareness reaches, so far he moves as he wishes." "Sir, is there anything greater than awareness?" "There is indeed something greater than awareness." "Then tell me that, sir."

Meaning today and context

An attentive life is a steadier life. Yet the teaching keeps going: attention itself rests on something deeper.

Chandogya 7.5.3: the fruit of revering awareness as Brahman; Nārada asks for what is greater than awareness.
