Adhyāya 6, Khaṇḍa 2

6.2.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

sadeva somyedamagra āsīdekamevādvitīyam | taddhaika āhurasadevedamagra āsīdekamevādvitīyam | tasmādasataḥ sajjāyata ||

"In the beginning, my dear, this was Being alone, one only, without a second. Some, it is true, say: 'In the beginning this was non-being alone, one only, without a second; from that non-being, being was born.'"

Meaning today and context

Behind all that exists is one reality, simply 'what is'. Whatever we go through, we are never cut off from that ground of existence.

Chandogya 6.2.1: Uddālaka begins: in the beginning there was only Being (sat), one without a second; he mentions the opposing view that it was non-being.

6.2.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

kutastu khalu somyaivaṃ syāditi hovāca | kathamasataḥ sajjāyeta | sattveva somyedamagra āsīdekamevādvitīyam ||

"But how, my dear, could that be?" he said. "How could being be born from non-being? No, my dear: in the beginning this was Being alone, one only, without a second."

Meaning today and context

Nothing comes from nothing. Uddālaka reasons it out rather than asking his son simply to believe, a good model for any honest inquiry.

Chandogya 6.2.2: Uddālaka rejects the view that being came from non-being.

6.2.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

tadaikṣata | bahu syāṃ prajāyeyeti | tattejo'sṛjata | tatteja aikṣata | bahu syāṃ prajāyeyeti | tadapo'sṛjata | tasmādyatra kva ca śocati svedate vā puruṣastejasa eva tadadhyāpo jāyante ||

"It thought: 'May I be many; may I be born.' It put forth heat. That heat thought: 'May I be many; may I be born.' It put forth water. That is why, whenever a person grieves or sweats from heat, water is born from heat alone."

Meaning today and context

The one reality becomes the many through its own will, not by an outside cause. The ancient image ties the cosmos to the tears and sweat of ordinary life.

Chandogya 6.2.3: Being wishes to become many and puts forth heat (tejas), and heat puts forth water.
