Adhyāya 6, Khaṇḍa 1

6.1.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

śvetaketurhāruṇeya āsa | taṃ ha pitovāca śvetaketo vasa brahmacaryam | na vai somyāsmatkulīno'nanūcya brahmabandhuriva bhavatīti ||

There was once Śvetaketu, the son of Āruṇi. His father said to him: "Śvetaketu, go and live the life of a student of the Veda. No one in our family, my dear, remains unlearned and is a Brahmin only by birth."

'Brahmin' here names a family of Vedic learning; the point is that birth without learning and conduct means nothing. Never read it as ranking people by birth.

Meaning today and context

A family name or background is not a substitute for learning and effort. A parent who cares sends the child to learn, not to coast on who they are.

Chandogya 6.1.1 opens the sixth chapter: the sage Uddālaka Āruṇi tells his son Śvetaketu to go and live as a student of the Veda.

6.1.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

sa ha dvādaśavarṣa upetya caturviṃśativarṣaḥ sarvānvedānadhītya mahāmanā anūcānamānī stabdha eyāya | taṃ ha pitovāca ||

He went to a teacher at twelve, and when he was twenty-four, having studied all the Vedas, he came back conceited, thinking himself learned, and stiff with pride. His father said to him:

Meaning today and context

Years of study can leave a person proud rather than wise. The story begins with that very common trap.

Chandogya 6.1.2: Śvetaketu returns home after twelve years of study, full of himself; his father addresses him.

6.1.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

śvetaketo yannu somyedaṃ mahāmanā anūcānamānī stabdho'si | uta tamādeśamaprākṣyaḥ yenāśrutaṃ śrutaṃ bhavatyamataṃ matamavijñātaṃ vijñātamiti | kathaṃ nu bhagavaḥ sa ādeśo bhavatīti ||

"Śvetaketu, my dear, since you are now so conceited, thinking yourself learned and stiff with pride, did you ask for that teaching by which the unheard becomes heard, the unthought becomes thought, the unknown becomes known?" "How, sir, can there be such a teaching?"

Meaning today and context

Knowing many facts is different from understanding what they all rest on. A good question from someone who cares can humble us more usefully than any criticism.

Chandogya 6.1.3: Uddālaka asks his proud son whether he learned the one teaching by which everything is known; Śvetaketu asks what it is.

6.1.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yathā somyaikena mṛtpiṇḍena sarvaṃ mṛnmayaṃ vijñātaṃ syāt | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ mṛttiketyeva satyam ||

"Just as, my dear, by one lump of clay everything made of clay is known: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'clay'."

Meaning today and context

Pot, cup and brick look different, but they are all clay. Many things that seem separate in our lives share one ground; seeing that ground brings a calm, steady understanding.

Chandogya 6.1.4: Uddālaka gives the first example: from one lump of clay, all things made of clay are known.

6.1.5 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yathā somyaikena lohamaṇinā sarvaṃ lohamayaṃ vijñātaṃ syāt | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ lohamityeva satyam ||

"Just as, my dear, by one nugget of gold everything made of gold is known: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'gold'."

Meaning today and context

A ring and a bangle have different names and uses, but their worth is the same gold. Names and shapes change; what they are made of does not.

Chandogya 6.1.5: the second example, gold (or copper) and all that is made of it.

6.1.6 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yathā somyaikena nakhanikṛntanena sarvaṃ kārṣṇāyasaṃ vijñātaṃ syāt | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ kṛṣṇāyasamityeva satyam | evaṃ somya sa ādeśo bhavatīti ||

"Just as, my dear, by one nail-cutter everything made of iron is known: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'iron'. Such, my dear, is that teaching."

Meaning today and context

Even a humble tool teaches the same lesson: understand the material and you understand all its forms. Look for the one underlying cause, not only the many effects.

Chandogya 6.1.6: the third example, iron and a nail-cutter; Uddālaka says this is the teaching Śvetaketu asked about.

6.1.7 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

na vai nūnaṃ bhagavantasta etadavediṣuḥ | yaddhyetadavediṣyankathaṃ me nāvakṣyan | iti bhagavāṃstveva me bravītviti | tathā somyeti hovāca ||

"Surely my revered teachers did not know this; for if they had known it, why would they not have told me? So you, sir, please tell it to me." "Very well, my dear," he said.

Meaning today and context

The proud student becomes a learner again the moment he admits a gap and asks. Asking is where real learning restarts.

Chandogya 6.1.7: Śvetaketu admits his teachers did not teach him this and asks his father to explain; the father agrees.
