6.3.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

teṣāṃ khalveṣāṃ bhūtānāṃ trīṇyeva bījāni bhavantyāṇḍajaṃ jīvajamudbhijjamiti ||

"Of these beings there are just three origins: born from an egg, born from a living being, and born from a sprout."

Meaning today and context

An old classification of life: birds and reptiles, mammals, plants. It sets up the account of how the one reality enters all of them.

Chandogya 6.3.1: Uddālaka lists the three origins of living beings.

6.3.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

seyaṃ devataikṣata | hantāhamimāstisro devatā anena jīvenātmanānupraviśya nāmarūpe vyākaravāṇīti ||

"That deity thought: 'Well then, let me enter these three deities with this living self (jīva-ātman) and bring forth name and form.'"

Meaning today and context

The Self in every living being is the same reality that made the world, entering it from within. What lives in you is not a stranger to what is.

Chandogya 6.3.2: the deity, Being, resolves to enter heat, water and food as the living self and to give form to name and shape.

6.3.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

tāsāṃ trivṛtaṃ trivṛtamekaikāṃ karavāṇīti | seyaṃ devatemāstisro devatā anenaiva jīvenātmanānupraviśya nāmarūpe vyākarot ||

"'Let me make each one of them threefold.' And that deity entered these three deities with this very living self and brought forth name and form."

Meaning today and context

Everything we meet is a mixture; nothing in the world is pure single stuff. The same one reality runs through all the mixing.

Chandogya 6.3.3: Being makes each of the three elements threefold and enters them as the living self.

6.3.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

tāsāṃ trivṛtaṃ trivṛtamekaikāmakarot | yathā tu khalu somyemāstisro devatāstrivṛttrivṛdekaikā bhavati tanme vijānīhīti ||

"It made each one of them threefold. Now learn from me, my dear, how each of these three deities becomes threefold."

Meaning today and context

A good teacher moves from the big claim to something the student can see. The father now turns to examples from fire, sun, moon and lightning.

Chandogya 6.3.4: Being makes each element threefold; Uddālaka asks his son to learn how this happens.
