"The red form of fire is the form of heat; the white, of water; the dark, of food. Thus the 'fire-ness' has gone from fire: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'three forms'."

Meaning today and context

When we look closely, a thing that seemed to be one separate object turns out to be made of other things. Names are useful labels, not the final truth.

Chandogya 6.4.1: Uddālaka shows that each bright thing is only the three elements: red = heat, white = water, dark = food (earth). First example: fire.

6.4.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yadādityasya rohitaṃ rūpaṃ tejasastadrūpam | yacchuklaṃ tadapām | yatkṛṣṇaṃ tadannasya | apāgādādityādādityatvam | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ trīṇi rūpāṇītyeva satyam ||

"The red form of the sun is the form of heat; the white, of water; the dark, of food. Thus the 'sun-ness' has gone from the sun: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'three forms'."

Meaning today and context

Even the grandest thing we know, the sun, is analysed the same way. Nothing is exempt from looking beneath its name.

Chandogya 6.4.2: Uddālaka shows that each bright thing is only the three elements: red = heat, white = water, dark = food (earth). Second example: the sun.

6.4.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yaccandramaso rohitaṃ rūpaṃ tejasastadrūpam | yacchuklaṃ tadapām | yatkṛṣṇaṃ tadannasya | apāgāccandrāccandratvam | vācārambhaṇaṃ vikāro nāmadheyaṃ trīṇi rūpāṇītyeva satyam ||

"The red form of the moon is the form of heat; the white, of water; the dark, of food. Thus the 'moon-ness' has gone from the moon: the change is only a matter of words, a name; the truth is just 'three forms'."

Meaning today and context

Repetition is the teacher's method: the same pattern, applied again and again, until the student sees it everywhere.

Chandogya 6.4.3: Uddālaka shows that each bright thing is only the three elements: red = heat, white = water, dark = food (earth). Third example: the moon.

6.4.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

Meaning today and context

Even the most sudden and dazzling event is made of the same few elements. What startles us is less separate than it seems.

Chandogya 6.4.4: Uddālaka shows that each bright thing is only the three elements: red = heat, white = water, dark = food (earth). Fourth example: lightning.

6.4.5 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

etaddha sma vai tadvidvāṃsa āhuḥ pūrve mahāśālā mahāśrotriyāḥ | na no'dya kaścanāśrutamamatamavijñātamudāhariṣyati | iti hyebhyo vidāṃ cakruḥ ||

"Knowing this, the great householders and great Vedic scholars of old said: 'No one now can mention to us anything we have not heard, not thought, not known.' For they knew it from these three."

Meaning today and context

Understanding principles, rather than memorising facts, is what lets a person meet anything new without panic. The one who knows the root is not thrown by the branches.

Chandogya 6.4.5: Uddālaka says the great householders and Vedic scholars of old knew this and so could not be stumped.

6.4.6 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yadu rohitamivābhūditi tejasastadrūpamiti tadvidāṃ cakruḥ | yadu śuklamivābhūdityapāṃ rūpamiti tadvidāṃ cakruḥ | yadu kṛṣṇamivābhūdityannasya rūpamiti tadvidāṃ cakruḥ ||

"Whatever appeared red, they knew: 'That is the form of heat.' Whatever appeared white, they knew: 'That is the form of water.' Whatever appeared dark, they knew: 'That is the form of food.'"

Meaning today and context

A clear framework lets one recognise the familiar inside the unfamiliar. Learning becomes seeing, not storing.

Chandogya 6.4.6: the old sages knew whatever looked red as heat, white as water, dark as food.

6.4.7 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

yadvavijñātamivābhūdityetāsāmeva devatānāṃ samāsa iti tadvidāṃ cakruḥ | yathā nu khalu somyemāstisro devatāḥ puruṣaṃ prāpya trivṛttrivṛdekaikā bhavati tanme vijānīhīti ||

"Whatever seemed unknown, they knew: 'That is a combination of these same deities.' Now learn from me, my dear, how these three deities, on reaching a person, each become threefold."

Meaning today and context

The unknown is not beyond understanding; it is often a new combination of what we already know. The teaching now turns from the sky to our own bodies.

Chandogya 6.4.7: even what seemed unknown they knew as a combination of the three; Uddālaka turns to how the three become threefold in a person.
