7.24.1 Sanatkumara to Narada

"Where one sees nothing else, hears nothing else, knows nothing else, that is the infinite. But where one sees something else, hears something else, knows something else, that is the small. The infinite is the immortal; the small is mortal." "Sir, on what does it rest?" "On its own greatness, or rather, not even on greatness."

Meaning today and context

The small is wherever there is 'me here and something else there' that I need or fear. The infinite is the wholeness where that split falls away; it rests on nothing outside itself.

Chandogya 7.24.1: Sanatkumāra defines the infinite: where one sees, hears and knows nothing else; the small is where one sees another. Nārada asks what the infinite rests on: 'on its own greatness, or not even on greatness.'

7.24.2 Sanatkumara to Narada

go'śvamiha mahimetyācakṣate hastihiraṇyaṃ dāsabhāryaṃ kṣetrāṇyāyatanānīti | nāhamevaṃ bravīmi | bravīmīti hovāca | anyo hyanyasminpratiṣṭhita iti ||

"Here people call cows and horses 'greatness', and elephants and gold, servants and wives, fields and houses. I do not speak of it so," he said. "I do not speak of it so; for there one thing rests on another."

The list counts servants and wives among a man's possessions; this reflects its time and must never be used to treat any person as property.

Meaning today and context

Possessions and status are a 'greatness' that depends on something outside us and can be taken away. The infinite does not lean on anything.

Chandogya 7.24.2: Sanatkumāra explains: what people call greatness, cattle, horses, gold, servants and wives, fields and houses, is one thing resting on another; the infinite is not like that.
