Chapter 6

6.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ākāśavadananto'haṃ ghaṭavatprakṛtaṃ jagat | iti jñānaṃ tathaitasya na tyāgo na graho layaḥ ||

I am boundless like space; the world, a product of nature, is like a pot. This is knowledge; and so there is no renouncing it, no grasping it, no dissolving it.

Meaning today and context

Space is not harmed when a pot breaks or helped when one is made. Knowing yourself as the open space in which things happen frees you from the struggle to hold on or push away.

Ashtavakra states the highest knowledge in four images, each ending: knowing this, there is nothing to renounce, grasp or dissolve. Here: I am boundless like space, the world is like a pot.

6.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

I am like the great ocean; the world of appearances is like its waves. This is knowledge; and so there is no renouncing it, no grasping it, no dissolving it.

Meaning today and context

Waves need not be fought or chased; they are the ocean's own movement. Life's events can be met in the same way.

Ashtavakra states the highest knowledge in four images, each ending: knowing this, there is nothing to renounce, grasp or dissolve. Here: I am the great ocean, the world is its waves.

6.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

I am like the mother-of-pearl; the universe is imagined in me like silver. This is knowledge; and so there is no renouncing it, no grasping it, no dissolving it.

Meaning today and context

You cannot throw away silver that was never there, nor hold it; you can only see the shell clearly. Clarity, not effort, ends the chase.

Ashtavakra states the highest knowledge in four images, each ending: knowing this, there is nothing to renounce, grasp or dissolve. Here: I am like the mother-of-pearl, the world is the imagined silver.

6.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ahaṃ vā sarvabhūteṣu sarvabhūtānyatho mayi | iti jñānaṃ tathaitasya na tyāgo na graho layaḥ ||

I am in all beings, and all beings are in me. This is knowledge; and so there is no renouncing it, no grasping it, no dissolving it.

Meaning today and context

If others are not outside you, there is nothing to defend against and nothing to grab from them. This sense of kinship can soften loneliness and rivalry alike.

Ashtavakra states the highest knowledge in four images, each ending: knowing this, there is nothing to renounce, grasp or dissolve. Here: I am in all beings, and all beings are in me.
