Chapter 7

7.1 Janaka to Ashtavakra

mayyanantamahāmbhodhau viśvapota itastataḥ | bhramati svāntavātena na mamāstyasahiṣṇutā ||

In me, the boundless ocean, the ship of the world drifts here and there, driven by the wind of its own mind; I am not impatient with it.

Meaning today and context

Events and moods will toss about; you do not have to become the storm. Letting things move without being shaken by each gust is a kind of patience.

Janaka describes his realisation in the image of a boundless ocean: the ship of the world drifts about in him, driven by its own winds, and he is not troubled.

7.2 Janaka to Ashtavakra

mayyanantamahāmbhodhau jagadvīciḥ svabhāvataḥ | udetu vāstamāyātu na me vṛddhirna ca kṣatiḥ ||

In me, the boundless ocean, the wave of the world rises of its own nature. Let it rise or let it set; I neither grow nor diminish.

Meaning today and context

Gains and losses come and go like waves. What you most deeply are is not made bigger by success or smaller by failure.

Janaka describes his realisation in the image of a boundless ocean: waves of the world rise and fall in him by nature, and he neither gains nor loses.

7.3 Janaka to Ashtavakra

mayyanantamahāmbhodhau viśvaṃ nāma vikalpanā | atiśānto nirākāra etadevāhamāsthitaḥ ||

In me, the boundless ocean, the universe is mere imagining. Utterly at peace and formless, in this alone I abide.

Meaning today and context

Much of what disturbs us is the story the mind builds around events. Resting beneath the story is a quiet that does not need things to change.

Janaka describes his realisation in the image of a boundless ocean: the universe in him is only imagination, and he abides as utterly peaceful and formless.

7.4 Janaka to Ashtavakra

nātmā bhāveṣu no bhāvastatrānante nirañjane | ityasakto'spṛhaḥ śānta etadevāhamāsthitaḥ ||

The Self is not in objects, nor is any object in that infinite, stainless Self. So I am unattached, free of longing, at peace; in this alone I abide.

Meaning today and context

Your self is not located in your possessions, and they cannot enter and define you. Seeing that loosens the grip of owning and losing.

Janaka continues: the Self is not in objects, nor are objects in the infinite, stainless Self, so he rests unattached, without longing, at peace.

7.5 Janaka to Ashtavakra

aho cinmātramevāhamindrajālopamaṃ jagat | ato mama kathaṃ kutra heyopādeyakalpanā ||

Ah, I am consciousness alone; the world is like a magician's show. So how, and where, could I have any notion of what to reject and what to accept?

Meaning today and context

When you see a magic show as a show, you enjoy it without trying to grab the coins out of the air. Holding life's spectacle lightly ends a lot of anxious grabbing and refusing.

Janaka concludes: he is pure consciousness and the world is like a magic show, so there is nowhere for the idea of rejecting or accepting to arise.
