and just as those juices there cannot distinguish, 'I am the juice of this tree, I am the juice of that tree,' in the same way, dear one, all these creatures, when they merge into Being, do not know, 'We are merging into Being.'

Every night in deep sleep we lose the labels that divide us and rest in something we do not notice. The separateness we defend so fiercely is not the deepest truth about us.
Chandogya 6.9.2: Uddalaka completes the honey illustration: as juices in honey cannot tell which tree they came from, beings who merge into Being (sat), as in deep sleep or death, do not know they have done so.
Whatever they are here, whether tiger or lion, wolf or boar, worm or moth, gnat or mosquito, that they become again.

We wake from sleep as the same person, habits and all; resting in the source does not by itself change who we are. Change needs knowing, not only rest.
Chandogya 6.9.3: Uddalaka says that beings return from Being into whatever form they had before, without knowing where they came from.

"That which is this finest essence: this whole world has it as its self. That is the real. That is the Self. That you are, Shvetaketu." "Sir, teach me still more." "So be it, dear one," he said.

The many juices were always one honey; your own deepest being is the same reality that underlies everything. Knowing this can steady a person who feels cut off and alone.
Chandogya 6.9.4: Uddalaka draws the lesson of the honey illustration with the refrain 'tat tvam asi', 'that you are'; Shvetaketu asks to be taught more and his father agrees.
