Adhyāya 6, Khaṇḍa 8

6.8.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

uddālako hāruṇiḥ śvetaketuṃ putramuvāca svapnāntaṃ me somya vijānīhīti | yatraitatpuruṣaḥ svapiti nāma satā somya tadā saṃpanno bhavati | svamapīto bhavati | tasmādenaṃ svapitītyācakṣate | svaṃ hyapīto bhavati ||

Uddālaka Āruṇi said to his son Śvetaketu: "Learn from me, my dear, about deep sleep. When a person here is said to be sleeping (svapiti), then, my dear, he has merged with Being; he has gone into his own (svam apītaḥ). That is why they say of him 'he sleeps': for he has gone into his own."

Meaning today and context

In deep, dreamless sleep, all our roles, worries and stories drop away, and yet we return refreshed. Every night we touch a ground of being that is ours without effort.

Chandogya 6.8.1: Uddālaka teaches what deep sleep is: the person merges with Being, reaching his own self.

6.8.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"Just as a bird tied by a string flies off in every direction and, finding no resting place elsewhere, settles down at the very place it is tied, so too, my dear, the mind flies off in every direction and, finding no resting place elsewhere, settles down on breath. For the mind, my dear, is tied to breath."

Resting attention on the breath is fine; forcing or holding the breath is not. This is not a breathing exercise or medical advice; practise with a qualified teacher.

Meaning today and context

A restless mind darts everywhere looking for rest and finds none outside. It comes home only to what it is tied to; returning attention to the breath is one simple way to let it settle.

Chandogya 6.8.2: the image of a bird tied by a string: the mind, after flying everywhere, settles on breath.

6.8.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"Learn from me, my dear, about hunger and thirst. When a person here is said to be hungry (aśiśiṣati), it is water that is leading away what has been eaten. Just as one speaks of a 'leader of cows', a 'leader of horses', a 'leader of men', so they call water 'the leader of food' (aśanāya). Here, my dear, know this body as a sprout that has sprung up: it cannot be without a root."

Meaning today and context

Every effect points back to a cause, as a sprout points to a root. Uddālaka uses ordinary hunger to turn his son's attention toward the source of things.

Chandogya 6.8.3: Uddālaka explains hunger: water leads the eaten food away, and the body is a sprout that must have a root.

6.8.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"Where else could its root be but in food? In just the same way, my dear, with food as the sprout, seek water as the root; with water as the sprout, seek heat as the root; with heat as the sprout, seek Being as the root. All these creatures, my dear, have Being as their root, Being as their home, Being as their foundation."

Meaning today and context

However unsteady life feels, every being rests on the same ground of existence. Tracing things to their root, step by step, is how we find what holds us.

Chandogya 6.8.4: tracing roots back: from food to water, water to heat, heat to Being; all creatures are rooted in Being.

6.8.5 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"Now, when a person here is said to be thirsty (pipāsati), it is heat that is leading away what has been drunk. Just as one speaks of a 'leader of cows', a 'leader of horses', a 'leader of men', so they call heat 'the leader of water' (udanyā). Here, my dear, know this same body as a sprout that has sprung up: it cannot be without a root."

Meaning today and context

Even thirst becomes a pointer to the source. Ordinary bodily experience, looked at carefully, leads beyond itself.

Chandogya 6.8.5: Uddālaka explains thirst: heat leads away what is drunk; again the body is a sprout with a root.

6.8.6 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"Where else could its root be but in water? With water as the sprout, my dear, seek heat as the root; with heat as the sprout, seek Being as the root. All these creatures, my dear, have Being as their root, Being as their home, Being as their foundation. How these three deities, on reaching a person, each become threefold has been told already. When this person, my dear, is departing, his speech merges into mind, mind into breath, breath into heat, and heat into the highest deity."

This describes what happens at death in order to point to the Self; it is not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or having thoughts of death, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

At death, everything returns step by step to the source it came from. Nothing is lost into nothing; it goes home to Being.

Chandogya 6.8.6: the roots traced again to Being; Uddālaka adds that at death speech merges into mind, mind into breath, breath into heat, heat into the highest deity.

6.8.7 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

sa ya eṣo'ṇimaitadātmyamidaṃ sarvam | tatsatyam | sa ātmā | tattvamasi śvetaketo iti | bhūya eva mā bhagavānvijñāpayatviti | tathā somyeti hovāca ||

"That which is this finest essence, the whole world has it as its Self. That is the truth. That is the Self. That you are, Śvetaketu." "Please, sir, teach me still more." "Very well, my dear," he said.

Meaning today and context

Beneath your name, roles, successes and failures lies the same reality that underlies everything. You are not small or separate at your core; this can give a steady sense of self that does not depend on others' opinion.

Chandogya 6.8.7: the first statement of the great saying tat tvam asi; the refrain recurs through 6.16. Śvetaketu asks for more.
