6.7.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

ṣoḍaśakalaḥ somya puruṣaḥ | pañcadaśāhāni māśīḥ | kāmamapaḥ piba | āpomayaḥ prāṇo na pibato vicchetsyata iti ||

"A person, my dear, has sixteen parts. Do not eat for fifteen days; drink water as you like. Breath is made of water; it will not be cut off in one who drinks."

This is a teaching demonstration about food and the mind, not dietary or fasting advice. Do not fast for long periods; going without food harms the body and mind. Consult a doctor before any fast.

The father lets his son learn from experience, not only from words. Here the experiment was about seeing how much the mind depends on nourishment.

Chandogya 6.7.1: to prove that mind is made of food, Uddālaka tells his son to eat nothing for fifteen days but to drink water freely.

6.7.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

sa ha pañcadaśāhāni nāśa | atha hainamupasasāda kiṃ bravīmi bho iti | ṛcaḥ somya yajūṃṣi sāmānīti | sa hovāca na vai mā pratibhānti bho iti ||

He did not eat for fifteen days. Then he came to his father and said, "What shall I recite, sir?" "The Ṛg verses, my dear, the Yajus formulas, the Sāman chants." He said, "They do not come to me, sir."

This is a teaching demonstration about food and the mind, not dietary or fasting advice. Do not fast for long periods; going without food harms the body and mind. Consult a doctor before any fast.

Meaning today and context

A starved body cannot hold a sharp mind. Even the best learning fails when the basics of nourishment and rest are neglected.

Chandogya 6.7.2: after fifteen days without food, Śvetaketu comes to his father but cannot recall the Vedas.

6.7.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

taṃ hovāca yathā somya mahato'bhyāhitasyaiko'ṅgāraḥ khadyotamātraḥ pariśiṣṭaḥ syāt | tena tato'pi na bahu dahet | evaṃ somya te ṣoḍaśānāṃ kalānāmekā kalā atiśiṣṭā syāt | tayaitarhi vedānnānubhavasi | aśāna | atha me vijñāsyasīti ||

He said to him: "Just as, my dear, of a great fire that has been kindled, a single coal the size of a firefly might be left, and with it the fire would not burn much more than that; so, my dear, of your sixteen parts only one part is left, and with it you do not now recall the Vedas. Eat; then you will understand me."

Feeling depleted can come from many causes, including illness or depression. Eat regularly, rest, and see a doctor if exhaustion or memory problems persist; Tele-MANAS 14416 for low mood.

Meaning today and context

When you are depleted, what is left is only an ember; it is not a failure of ability. Rest and nourishment come first, then understanding.

Chandogya 6.7.3: Uddālaka explains with the image of a single ember left from a great fire, and tells his son to eat.

6.7.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

sa hāśa | atha hainamupasasāda | taṃ ha yatkiṃ ca papraccha sarvaṃ ha pratipede ||

He ate. Then he came to his father, and whatever his father asked him, he answered it all.

Meaning today and context

Once nourished, the same mind that went blank becomes clear again.

Chandogya 6.7.4: Śvetaketu eats, returns, and now answers everything his father asks.

6.7.5 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

taṃ hovāca | yathā somya mahato'bhyāhitasyaikamaṅgāraṃ khadyotamātraṃ pariśiṣṭaṃ taṃ tṛṇairupasamādhāya prajvalayettena tato'pi bahu dahet ||

He said to him: "Just as, my dear, of a great fire that has been kindled, a single coal the size of a firefly is left, and one feeds it with straw and makes it blaze, so that with it the fire would then burn much more than that;"

Meaning today and context

A small spark, when fed, becomes a full fire again. Low energy is not permanent; with care it can be rekindled.

Chandogya 6.7.5: Uddālaka completes the image: the single ember, fed with straw, blazes up again.

6.7.6 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

evaṃ somya te ṣoḍaśānāṃ kalānāmekā kalātiśiṣṭābhūt | sānnenopasamāhitā prājvālī | tayaitarhi vedānanubhavasi | annamayaṃ hi somya manaḥ | āpomayaḥ prāṇaḥ | tejomayī vāgiti | taddhāsya vijajñāviti vijajñāviti ||

"So, my dear, of your sixteen parts only one part was left; fed with food, it blazed up, and with it you now recall the Vedas. For the mind, my dear, is made of food; breath is made of water; speech is made of heat." And he understood it from him; he understood it.

An ancient teaching about the mind and food, not dietary or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Understanding that comes from one's own experience goes deep. Caring for the body is a real part of caring for the mind.

Chandogya 6.7.6: the lesson applied: the one remaining part, fed with food, blazed up, and Śvetaketu recalls the Vedas; he understood his father's teaching.
