"When curd is churned, my dear, its finest part rises upward; that becomes butter (ghee)."

Meaning today and context

Every Indian kitchen knows this image. The finest part of anything rises to the top when it is worked on.

Chandogya 6.6.1: Uddālaka gives the image of churned curd: its finest part rises and becomes butter.

6.6.2 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"In just the same way, my dear, when food is eaten, its finest part rises upward; that becomes the mind."

Meaning today and context

The mind is the subtlest product of what we take in. What we feed ourselves, in every sense, shapes how we think.

Chandogya 6.6.2: in the same way, the finest part of eaten food rises and becomes the mind.

6.6.3 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

apāṃ somya pīyamānānāṃ yo'ṇimā sa ūrdhvaḥ samudīṣati | sa prāṇo bhavati ||

"When water is drunk, my dear, its finest part rises upward; that becomes breath."

Meaning today and context

Life-breath is pictured as the essence of the water we drink. The body is fed from without and refined within.

Chandogya 6.6.3: the finest part of water drunk becomes breath.

6.6.4 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

"When heat is eaten, my dear, its finest part rises upward; that becomes speech."

Meaning today and context

Speech is our energy in its finest form. It is worth using it with care.

Chandogya 6.6.4: the finest part of heat eaten becomes speech.

6.6.5 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

annamayaṃ hi somya manaḥ | āpomayaḥ prāṇaḥ | tejomayī vāgiti | bhūya eva mā bhagavānvijñāpayatviti | tathā somyeti hovāca ||

"For the mind, my dear, is made of food; breath is made of water; speech is made of heat." "Please, sir, teach me still more." "Very well, my dear," he said.

The same lesson repeated shows how deep teaching works: one point, from many sides, until it lands. Next the father will let his son test it on himself.

Chandogya 6.6.5: the same summary as 6.5.4; Śvetaketu asks for more and his father agrees.
