Prakaraṇa 4

4.1 Shankaracharya

ahaṃpratyayabījaṃ yadahaṃpratyayavatsthitam | nāhaṃpratyayavahnyuṣṭaṃ kathaṃ karma prarohati ||

Action has the I-notion as its seed and lasts as long as the I-notion does; when [its seed] has been burnt in the fire of the notion 'not I', how can action sprout?

Meaning today and context

A roasted seed looks like a seed but cannot grow. When the sense of 'I did this, it is mine' is seen through, actions no longer bind or haunt you in the same way.

Chapter 4, on the 'I'-notion. Shankaracharya argues that action, whose seed is the notion 'I am the doer', cannot sprout again once that seed is burnt by the knowledge 'this is not I'.

4.2 Shankaracharya

dṛṣṭavaccetprarohaḥ syānnānyakarmā sa iṣyate | tannirodhe kathaṃ tatsyātpṛcchāmo vastaducyatām ||

[If you say:] 'It does sprout, as we see', [we reply:] it is not held to be a different action. When that [I-notion] has ceased, how could [new action] arise? We ask you: tell us.

A step in a debate: the knower's body goes on acting because of what has already been set in motion, not because new bondage is being created.

An exchange with an opponent: if the knower still visibly acts and lives, does action not still sprout? Shankaracharya answers that this is not new action, and challenges the opponent to explain how new action could arise once the I-notion is stopped.

4.3 Shankaracharya

dehādyārambhasāmarthyājjñānaṃ sadviṣayaṃ tvayi | abhibhūya phalaṃ kuryātkarmānte jñānamudbhavet ||

Because [the action that has begun] has the power to produce the body and the rest, it may overpower in you the knowledge whose object is the Real and produce its result; when that action is exhausted, knowledge emerges [fully].

Understanding does not instantly erase old patterns, moods or bodily life; these run their course. Clarity and the old momentum can coexist for a while without the clarity being false.

Shankaracharya considers why knowledge does not end the body at once: the action that produced the body has power enough to run its course first.

4.4 Shankaracharya

ārabdhasya phale hyete bhogo jñānaṃ ca karmaṇaḥ | avirodhastayoryukto vaidharmyaṃ cetarasya tu ||

For enjoyment [of the body's experiences] and knowledge are both results of the action that has already begun; so there is no conflict between them. But the other [kind of action, not yet begun] is of a different nature.

Living an ordinary life with its pleasures and pains does not contradict inner understanding; both belong to the same life that is already under way.

Shankaracharya explains how knowledge and the continuing life of the body can coexist: both are results of the same action that has already begun, while other stored actions are different in kind.

4.5 Shankaracharya

dehātmajñānavajjñānaṃ dehātmajñānabādhakam | ātmanyeva bhavedyasya sa necchannapi mucyate ||

One who has knowledge of the Self as [firm as ordinary] knowledge that the body is the Self, a knowledge that cancels the notion that the body is the Self, is liberated even without wishing it.

'Not the body' is about identity, not neglect or contempt for the body; keep caring for your health. If you feel worthless or want to harm yourself, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Notice how effortlessly you feel 'I am this body'. Freedom is when 'I am awareness' becomes just as natural. It is not something you have to grab; when the understanding is firm, freedom follows by itself.

Shankaracharya concludes the chapter: one whose knowledge of the Self is as firm as ordinary people's identification with the body is freed, whether wishing it or not.
