Prakaraṇa 3

3.1 Shankaracharya

īśvaraścedanātmā syānnāsāvasmīti dhārayet | ātmā cedīśvaro'smīti vidyā sānyanivartikā ||

If Ishvara were other than the Self, one should not hold 'I am He'. If Ishvara is the Self, then the knowledge 'I am Ishvara' removes [the notion of] another.

'I am Ishvara' refers to the Self beyond the individual personality, not to the ego; it gives no one special powers or authority over others, and should not be accepted from anyone who claims to be God to gain followers or money.

In Advaita the divine is not finally a stranger far away but the deepest truth of oneself. This is meant to dissolve separation and fear, not to inflate the ego of the person.

Chapter 3, on Ishvara (God). Shankaracharya argues against those who hold God to be wholly other than oneself: the Upanishad's knowledge is 'I am Ishvara', which removes the notion of being separate.

3.2 Shankaracharya

ātmano'nyasya ceddharmā asthūlatvādayo matāḥ | ajñeyatve'sya kiṃ taiḥ syādātmatve tvanyadhīhnutiḥ ||

If attributes such as 'not gross' are held to belong to something other than the Self, what use would they be, since it would be unknowable? But if they describe the Self, they deny the notion of anything other.

Talk about the ultimate matters only if it concerns you directly. Shankara reads the Upanishads' descriptions as pointing at your own awareness, not at a distant object of speculation.

Shankaracharya continues against the view that God is other than the Self: the Upanishad's descriptions such as 'not gross' must refer to the Self.

3.3 Shankaracharya

mithyādhyāsaniṣedhārthaṃ tato'sthūlādi gṛhyatām | paratra cenniṣedhārthaṃ śūnyatāvarṇanaṃ hi tat ||

So take 'not gross' and the rest as meant to negate false superimposition [on the Self]. If they negated something elsewhere, that would be a description of mere emptiness.

The 'not this' of Vedanta strips away false ideas about yourself; it does not leave you with nothing. What remains is awareness, not a void.

Shankaracharya states how the negative descriptions should be read, and warns that applying them to something other than the Self would amount to the Buddhist doctrine of the void.

3.4 Shankaracharya

bubhutsoryadi cānyatra pratyagātmana iṣyate | aprāṇo hyamanāḥ śubhra iti cānarthakaṃ vacaḥ ||

And if [these descriptions] were meant for something other than the inner Self of the one who seeks to know, then words such as 'breathless, mindless, pure' would be pointless.

Spiritual teaching is not information about something out there but a mirror for the one asking. If it does not touch your own sense of 'I', it has missed its purpose.

Shankaracharya ends the chapter: the Upanishad's words are for one who wants to know, so they must concern that seeker's own inner Self.
