Prakaraṇa 2

2.1 Shankaracharya

pratiṣeddhumaśakyatvānneti netīti śeṣitam | idaṃ nāhamidaṃ nāhamityaddhā pratipadyate ||

What cannot be negated is what is left over by 'not this, not this'. [The seeker] grasps it directly: 'I am not this, I am not this.'

A practice of inner identity, not denial of feelings or the body: pain, illness and distress still need care and treatment. If you feel detached from yourself in a frightening way, talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When pain, fear or a harsh judgement grips you, you can say honestly 'this is happening, but this is not what I am.' The one who notices the pain is not the pain. This is a steadier sense of self, not a way to ignore the body or avoid treatment.

Chapter 2, on negation. Shankaracharya explains what remains after the Upanishadic 'not this, not this': the one who cannot be negated, recognised directly as 'I am not this'.

2.2 Shankaracharya

idaṃdhīridamātmotthā vācārambhaṇagocarā | niṣiddhātmodbhavatvātsā na punarmānatāṃ vrajet ||

The notion 'this' arises from the self taken as 'this' [the body and the like] and lies in the realm of 'a mere matter of words'. Since it arises from a self that has been negated, it cannot again become a valid means of knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Labels like 'failure', 'success', 'the sick one', 'the clever one' describe things you have, not what you are. Once you see that, they lose their power to define you.

Shankaracharya explains why the notion 'this' (the body, mind and objects taken as oneself) cannot regain authority once negated: it belongs to the realm of mere names.

2.3 Shankaracharya

pūrvabuddhimabādhitvā nottarā jāyate matiḥ | dṛśirekaḥ svayaṃsiddhaḥ phalatvātsa na bādhyate ||

A later cognition does not arise without sublating the earlier notion. Seeing [pure awareness] is one and self-established; since it is the result [of every act of knowing], it is never sublated.

Meaning today and context

Every opinion can be corrected by a better one, but the awareness in which every correction happens is never itself corrected. That awareness is the one stable thing you can rely on.

Shankaracharya gives the logic of negation: a later correct cognition sublates an earlier wrong one, but pure seeing, the result of all knowing, can never itself be sublated.

2.4 Shankaracharya

idaṃvanamatikramya śokamohādidūṣitam | vanādgāndhārako yadvatsvamātmānaṃ prapadyate ||

Just as the man of Gandhara got out of the forest and reached his own home, so [the seeker], crossing beyond this forest of 'this', polluted with grief, delusion and the rest, reaches his own Self.

When someone is grieving, acknowledge the loss first; this verse does not dismiss mourning. If grief feels unbearable, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Grief and confusion feel like being lost in a forest of things that seem to be you. The way home is not a far journey but a return to what you already are.

Shankaracharya closes the chapter with the parable from the Chandogya Upanishad (6.14) of a man from Gandhara, led blindfold into a forest and finding his way home.
