hantātmajñasya dhīrasya khelato bhogalīlayā | na hi saṃsāravāhīkairmūḍhaiḥ saha samānatā ||
Ah, the steady knower of the Self, who plays the game of experience as sport, bears no likeness to the deluded who drag the burden of worldly life like beasts of burden.
'The deluded' is not a licence to look down on anyone; everyone carries burdens.

The same life can be lived as a heavy load or lightly, almost as play. The difference lies less in events than in whether you are weighed down by identifying with them.
Responding to Ashtavakra's challenge, Janaka describes the knower of the Self: one who plays at the game of experience is nothing like the deluded who haul the load of worldly life like beasts of burden.
yatpadaṃ prepsavo dīnāḥ śakrādyāḥ sarvadevatāḥ | aho tatra sthito yogī na harṣamupagacchati ||
Ah, the yogi established in that state which Indra and all the gods long for in their want, does not become elated.

Even reaching what everyone wants does not excite the person settled within. Success intoxicates less when your peace does not depend on it.
Responding to Ashtavakra's challenge, Janaka describes the knower of the Self: settled in the state that even Indra and the gods long for, he is not elated by it.
For one who knows That, there is inwardly no contact with merit or sin, just as space is not truly touched by smoke, though it seems to be.
Not a licence for harmful action: our actions still affect others and we remain responsible for them.
Meaning today and context
Your deepest self is not stained by what you have done, as the sky is not dirtied by smoke. This is not a licence to do wrong; it can help you stop defining yourself by past guilt.
Responding to Ashtavakra's challenge, Janaka describes the knower of the Self: merit and sin do not touch him inwardly, as smoke does not really touch the sky.
Who could restrain the great soul who has known this whole world to be the Self alone, as he lives on spontaneously, as things come?
Meaning today and context
One who no longer needs the world to be other than it is lives with an inner freedom no circumstance can block. That ease grows from understanding, not from breaking rules.
Responding to Ashtavakra's challenge, Janaka describes the knower of the Self: who could hinder the great soul who knows this whole world to be the Self, and lives as things come?
ābrahmastambaparyante bhūtagrāme caturvidhe | vijñasyaiva hi sāmarthyamicchānicchāvivarjane ||
Among the four kinds of beings, from Brahmā down to a tuft of grass, it is only the one who knows who has the power to give up both wanting and not-wanting.
Meaning today and context
Every creature is pushed about by wanting and not-wanting. Stepping out of both comes through understanding, not through willpower alone.
Responding to Ashtavakra's challenge, Janaka describes the knower of the Self: among all four kinds of beings, from Brahma to a blade of grass, only the wise has the power to give up both desire and aversion.
Rarely does someone know the Self as one without a second, the Lord of the world. Such a one does what he knows to be fitting, and for him there is no fear anywhere.
Meaning today and context
When you know what you are, you act from that knowing rather than from fear of others. Fearlessness here comes from being settled in yourself, not from recklessness.
Responding to Ashtavakra's challenge, Janaka describes the knower of the Self: rare is the one who knows the Self as one without a second, the Lord of the world; he acts from what he knows and has no fear from anywhere.
