Chapter 3

3.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

avināśinamātmānamekaṃ vijñāya tattvataḥ | tavātmajñasya dhīrasya kathamarthārjane ratiḥ ||

Having truly known the Self as one and imperishable, how can you, a steady knower of the Self, still take delight in acquiring wealth?

Earning a living and providing for one's family is legitimate. This is about inner clinging, not a call to give up work; not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

If your worth does not rest on what you own, the restless hunger to pile up more loses its hold. The verse questions wealth as a source of identity, not honest earning.

Ashtavakra opens a testing chapter: having heard Janaka claim realisation, he asks how a knower of the one, imperishable Self could still delight in gaining wealth.

3.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ātmājñānādaho prītirviṣayabhramagocare | śukterajñānato lobho yathā rajatavibhrame ||

Ah, it is from ignorance of the Self that love arises for the world of objects, which is a mere illusion, just as greed arises for illusory silver when mother-of-pearl is not recognised.

Meaning today and context

Much of our craving is for something we have misread, like the shine of a shell taken for silver. Seeing clearly what a thing really is often ends its pull.

Ashtavakra explains why the pull toward objects persists: it comes from not knowing the Self, like greed for silver seen in mother-of-pearl.

3.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

viśvaṃ sphurati yatredaṃ taraṅgā iva sāgare | so'hamasmīti vijñāya, kiṃ dīna iva dhāvasi ||

Knowing 'I am That in which this universe shimmers like waves on the ocean', why do you run about like a wretched man?

Meaning today and context

When we forget our own depth we chase things and approval as if we were poor inside. Remembering that life's ups and downs are waves on something larger lets you stop running in panic.

Ashtavakra reminds Janaka that he is that in which the universe shimmers like waves on the sea, and asks why he still runs about like someone in need.

3.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

śrutvāpi śuddhacaitanyamātmānamatisundaram | upasthetyantasaṃsakto mālinyamadhigacchati ||

Even after hearing that the Self is pure consciousness, supremely beautiful, one who is utterly attached to sexual pleasure falls into impurity.

About one's own compulsive craving, not a condemnation of sexuality or of anyone, and not a reason for shame. If a compulsion is causing distress, talk to a counsellor; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Knowing the truth in theory doesn't free us while a compulsion still runs our life. The verse points at the gap between what we have heard and how we live.

Ashtavakra continues his test: even after hearing that the Self is pure, beautiful consciousness, one who is deeply attached to sexual pleasure becomes sullied.

3.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṃ sarvabhūtāni cātmani | munerjānata āścaryaṃ mamatvamanuvartate ||

It is a wonder that in a sage who knows the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self, the sense of 'mine' still goes on.

Meaning today and context

We can understand oneness and still be possessive about our things, our people and our opinions. Noticing this gap honestly is where change begins.

Ashtavakra marvels that a sage who knows the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self should still feel 'this is mine'.

3.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

āsthitaḥ paramādvaitaṃ mokṣārthe'pi vyavasthitaḥ | āścaryaṃ kāmavaśago vikalaḥ keliśikṣayā ||

Wonder! One who has taken his stand in the supreme non-duality and is set on liberation is still in the grip of desire, unsettled by the practice of love-play.

About one's own compulsive craving, not a condemnation of sexuality or of anyone, and not a reason for shame. If a compulsion is causing distress, talk to a counsellor; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Lofty ideas and an ordinary craving can live side by side in the same person. Honesty about that is more useful than pretending to be beyond it.

Ashtavakra marvels that someone who claims to rest in non-duality and to seek liberation could still be ruled by desire and unsettled by amorous play.

3.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

udbhūtaṃ jñānadurmitramavadhāryātidurbalaḥ | āścaryaṃ kāmamākāṅkṣetkālamantamanuśritaḥ ||

Wonder! Though he knows desire, once arisen, to be the enemy of knowledge, a man grown very feeble and come to his last days still longs for sensual pleasure.

Meaning today and context

Craving does not fade by itself with age or weakness; it can outlive the capacity to enjoy. Seeing this clearly is itself a kind of release.

Ashtavakra marvels that a person who knows lust to be the enemy of knowledge, though very weak and near his end, still longs for sensual pleasure.

3.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ihāmutra viraktasya nityānityavivekinaḥ | āścaryaṃ mokṣakāmasya mokṣādeva vibhīṣikā ||

Wonder! One who is detached from this world and the next, who discerns the eternal from the transient and longs for liberation, is afraid of liberation itself.

Meaning today and context

Even when we sincerely want to change, part of us fears losing the familiar self. Fear of freedom is common; naming it takes away some of its power.

Ashtavakra marvels that one who is dispassionate about this world and the next, who discerns the lasting from the passing and seeks liberation, should still be afraid of liberation.

3.9 Ashtavakra to Janaka

dhīrastu bhojyamāno'pi pīḍyamāno'pi sarvadā | ātmānaṃ kevalaṃ paśyanna tuṣyati na kupyati ||

But the steady one, whether he is being served delights or being tormented, always seeing only the Self, is neither gratified nor angered.

Inner steadiness is not a reason to tolerate abuse or mistreatment. If you are in danger, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Steadiness means not being yanked about by how others treat you, kindly or harshly. Your centre is not handed over to them.

Ashtavakra describes the truly steady one: whether he is feasted or tormented, he sees only the Self and is neither pleased nor angry.

3.10 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ceṣṭamānaṃ śarīraṃ svaṃ paśyatyanyaśarīravat | saṃstave cāpi nindāyāṃ kathaṃ kṣubhyetmahāśayaḥ ||

He sees his own body moving about as if it were another's body; how could such a large-hearted one be disturbed by praise or by blame?

Meaning today and context

Stepping back and watching yourself as you might watch someone else takes the sting out of criticism and the intoxication out of praise.

Ashtavakra says the great-hearted one watches his own body acting as if it were someone else's, so praise and blame cannot disturb him.

3.11 Ashtavakra to Janaka

māyāmātramidaṃ viśvaṃ paśyanvigatakautukaḥ | api sannihite mṛtyau kathaṃ trasyati dhīradhīḥ ||

Seeing this universe as mere illusion, with all eagerness for it gone, how could one of steady mind be afraid even when death is close at hand?

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are thinking about death or harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When we hold life's spectacle a little more lightly, the fear of death can loosen too. This is about steadiness in facing mortality, not about wanting death.

Ashtavakra says one who sees the universe as mere appearance, with curiosity gone, does not tremble even when death is near.

3.12 Ashtavakra to Janaka

niḥspṛhaṃ mānasaṃ yasya nairāśye'pi mahātmanaḥ | tasyātmajñānatṛptasya tulanā kena jāyate ||

The great soul whose mind is free of longing even when hope is gone, and who is satisfied with knowledge of the Self, with whom can he be compared?

Meaning today and context

Someone who stays whole even when plans collapse has a rare strength. Satisfaction that comes from within is not destroyed by outcomes.

Ashtavakra praises the great soul whose mind wants nothing even when hopes fail, satisfied by knowledge of the Self: no one can be compared with him.

3.13 Ashtavakra to Janaka

svabhāvādeva jānāno dṛśyametanna kiṃcana | idaṃ grāhyamidaṃ tyājyaṃ sa kiṃ paśyati dhīradhīḥ ||

Knowing by his very nature that all this that is seen is nothing, how would the steady-minded one see 'this is to be taken, this is to be rejected'?

Meaning today and context

When nothing outside is treated as the final source of happiness, the endless sorting of life into 'must have' and 'must avoid' grows quiet.

Ashtavakra says the steady-minded, knowing by nature that all this visible world is nothing, does not see things as 'to be grabbed' or 'to be thrown away'.

3.14 Ashtavakra to Janaka

antastyaktakaṣāyasya nirdvandvasya nirāśiṣaḥ | yadṛcchayāgato bhogo na duḥkhāya na tuṣṭaye ||

For one who has inwardly cast off all stains, who is beyond the pairs of opposites and free of wishes, enjoyment that comes by chance brings neither pain nor gratification.

Meaning today and context

You can enjoy what comes without clutching it, and lose it without collapsing. Pleasure itself is not the problem; depending on it is.

Ashtavakra closes the test: for one inwardly cleansed, free of opposites and of wishes, pleasure that comes by chance brings neither sorrow nor gratification.
