8.9.1 Prajapati to Indra

atha hendro'prāpyaiva devānetadbhayaṃ dadarśa | yathaiva khalvayamasmiñcharīre sādhvalaṃkṛte sādhvalaṃkṛto bhavati suvasane suvasanaḥ pariṣkṛte pariṣkṛta evamevāyamasminnandhe'ndho bhavati srāme srāmaḥ parivṛkṇe parivṛkṇaḥ | asyaiva śarīrasya nāśamanveṣa naśyati | nāhamatra bhogyaṃ paśyāmīti ||

But Indra, even before he reached the gods, saw this danger: 'Just as this self is well adorned when this body is well adorned, finely dressed when it is finely dressed, groomed when it is groomed, so too it will be blind when the body is blind, lame when it is lame, crippled when it is crippled. It will perish as soon as this body perishes. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'

Indra does not settle for a comfortable answer; he thinks it through and sees it cannot be true. If who we are rises and falls with the body, then ageing and illness would be the end of us. Honest questioning is part of wisdom.

Chandogya 8.9.1: on his way back, before reaching the gods, Indra sees the flaw in the teaching: a self that changes with the body would also go blind, lame and perish with it.

8.9.2 Prajapati to Indra

sa samitpāṇiḥ punareyāya | taṃ ha prajāpatiruvāca | maghavanyacchāntahṛdayaḥ prāvrājīḥ sārdhaṃ virocanena kimicchanpunarāgama iti | sa hovāca yathā eva khalvayaṃ bhagavo'smiñcharīre sādhvalaṃkṛte sādhvalaṃkṛto bhavati suvasane suvasanaḥ pariṣkṛte pariṣkṛta evamevāyamasminnandhe'ndho bhavati srāme srāmaḥ parivṛkṇe parivṛkṇaḥ | asyaiva śarīrasya nāśamanveṣa naśyati | nāhamatra bhogyaṃ paśyāmīti ||

He came back with fuel in hand. Prajāpati said to him, 'Maghavan, you went away content at heart together with Virocana. Wanting what have you come back?' He said, 'Sir, just as this self is well adorned when this body is well adorned, finely dressed when it is finely dressed, groomed when it is groomed, so too it will be blind when the body is blind, lame when it is lame, crippled when it is crippled. It will perish as soon as this body perishes. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'

It takes humility to go back and admit you have not understood. Indra returns as a student again, carrying his doubt honestly.

Chandogya 8.9.2: Indra returns to Prajāpati with fuel in hand; asked why, he states his doubt about the bodily self.

8.9.3 Prajapati to Indra

evamevaiṣa maghavanniti hovāca | etaṃ tveva te bhūyo'nuvyākhyāsyāmi | vasāparāṇi dvātriṃśataṃ varṣāṇīti | sa hāparāṇi dvātriṃśataṃ varṣāṇyuvāsa | tasmai hovāca ||

'It is just so, Maghavan,' he said. 'But I will explain it to you further. Live here another thirty-two years.' He lived there another thirty-two years. Then Prajāpati said to him:

The teacher confirms the student's doubt and asks for more time. Deeper understanding comes in stages and needs patience.

Chandogya 8.9.3: Prajāpati agrees and asks Indra to live with him another thirty-two years before he explains further.
