8.10.1 Prajapati to Indra

ya eṣa svapne mahīyamānaścaratyeṣa ātmeti hovāca | etadamṛtamabhayametadbrahmeti | sa ha śāntahṛdayaḥ pravavrāja | sa hāprāpyaiva devānetadbhayaṃ dadarśa | tadyadyapīdaṃ śarīramandhaṃ bhavatyanandhaḥ sa bhavati yadi srāmamasrāmaḥ | naivaiṣo'sya doṣeṇa duṣyati ||

'The one who moves about in dreams, enjoying himself: that is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' Indra went away content at heart. But even before he reached the gods he saw this danger: 'Now, even if this body is blind, that one is not blind; if it is lame, he is not lame. He is not harmed by its defects.'

Meaning today and context

The dreaming mind is freer than the body, but it is not yet the whole truth. Each stage of understanding is a step, not the end.

Chandogya 8.10.1: Prajāpati's second teaching: the one who moves about in dreams is the Self. Indra leaves content, but again sees a problem on the way.

8.10.2 Prajapati to Indra

na vadhenāsya hanyate | nāsya srāmyeṇa srāmaḥ | ghnanti tvevainam | vicchādayantīva | apriyavetteva bhavati | api roditīva nāhamatra bhogyaṃ paśyāmīti ||

'He is not killed when the body is killed, nor lamed by its lameness. And yet it is as if they kill him, as if they strip him; he seems to feel what is unpleasant; he even seems to weep. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'

Persistent nightmares, anxiety or distressing thoughts deserve care; speak to a doctor or counsellor, or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Our inner world can torment us even when nothing is wrong outside: in dreams, and in anxious thoughts, we suffer what is not happening. The mind's experiences are not the deepest self either.

Chandogya 8.10.2: Indra's reflection continues: the dream self is not harmed by the body, yet in dreams it seems to be struck, chased and to weep.

8.10.3 Prajapati to Indra

sa samitpāṇiḥ punareyāya | taṃ ha prajāpatiruvāca | maghavanyacchāntahṛdayaḥ prāvrājīḥ kimicchanpunarāgama iti | sa hovāca | tadyadyapīdaṃ bhagavaḥ śarīramandhaṃ bhavatyanandhaḥ sa bhavati yadi srāmamasrāmaḥ | naivaiṣo'sya doṣeṇa duṣyati ||

He came back with fuel in hand. Prajāpati said to him, 'Maghavan, you went away content at heart. Wanting what have you come back?' He said, 'Sir, even if this body is blind, that one is not blind; if it is lame, he is not lame. He is not harmed by its defects.'

Meaning today and context

A second time Indra returns rather than settling. Persistence in seeking clarity is the mark of a real student.

Chandogya 8.10.3: Indra returns again with fuel in hand and tells Prajāpati the first part of his doubt about the dream self.

8.10.4 Prajapati to Indra

na vadhenāsya hanyate | nāsya srāmyeṇa srāmaḥ | ghnanti tvivainam | vicchādayantīva | apriyavetteva bhavati | api roditīva | nāhamatra bhogyaṃ paśyāmīti | evamevaiṣa maghavanniti hovāca | etaṃ tveva te bhūyo'nuvyākhyāsyāmi | vasāparāṇi dvātriṃśataṃ varṣāṇīti | sa hāparāṇi dvātriṃśataṃ varṣāṇyuvāsa | tasmai hovāca ||

'He is not killed when the body is killed, nor lamed by its lameness. And yet it is as if they kill him, as if they strip him; he seems to feel what is unpleasant; he even seems to weep. I see nothing worthwhile in this.' 'It is just so, Maghavan,' he said. 'But I will explain it to you further. Live here another thirty-two years.' He lived there another thirty-two years. Then Prajāpati said to him:

Again the teacher affirms the doubt and asks for more patience. Being told 'you are right, keep going' is part of how a good teacher guides.

Chandogya 8.10.4: Indra finishes stating his doubt; Prajāpati agrees and asks him to live there another thirty-two years.
