'When one is fast asleep, wholly gathered in and serene, and knows no dream: that is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' Indra went away content at heart. But even before he reached the gods he saw this danger: 'Truly, this one does not know himself at that time as "I am this", nor does he know these beings. He has gone into oblivion, as it were. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'

Escaping into blankness is not the goal. Indra sees that mere absence of trouble, like deep sleep, is not the fullness he is looking for.
Chandogya 8.11.1: Prajāpati's third teaching: the one in dreamless sleep is the Self. Indra leaves, but sees that in deep sleep one knows neither oneself nor others, as if annihilated.

He came back with fuel in hand. Prajāpati said to him, 'Maghavan, you went away content at heart. Wanting what have you come back?' He said, 'Sir, truly this one does not know himself at that time as "I am this", nor does he know these beings. He has gone into oblivion, as it were. I see nothing worthwhile in this.'

A third return. The search for the truth about oneself is worth not giving up on, even after many partial answers.
Chandogya 8.11.2: Indra returns a third time with fuel in hand and tells Prajāpati his doubt about deep sleep.

'It is just so, Maghavan,' he said. 'But I will explain it to you further; it is nothing other than this. Live here another five years.' He lived there another five years. Those made one hundred and one. This is what people mean when they say, 'Maghavan lived the student life with Prajāpati for a hundred and one years.' Then Prajāpati said to him:

Even the king of the gods needed a hundred and one years. Deep understanding of oneself is a long journey; slow progress is not failure.
Chandogya 8.11.3: Prajāpati asks Indra to stay five more years, completing one hundred and one years of study, before the final teaching.
