'Maghavan, this body is mortal; it is in the grip of death. It is the dwelling place of this deathless, bodiless Self. One who has a body is in the grip of the pleasant and the unpleasant; for one who has a body there is no getting free of the pleasant and the unpleasant. But the pleasant and the unpleasant do not touch one who is bodiless.'
'Bodiless' refers to knowing the Self, not to leaving the body. This is never a reason to neglect health or harm oneself; if you are thinking of ending your life, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

As long as we take ourselves to be only the body, we are tossed between what we like and what we dislike. The body is our home, to be cared for, but not the whole of who we are; seeing that brings a steadiness that pleasure and pain cannot shake.
Chandogya 8.12.1: Prajāpati's final teaching to Indra: the body is mortal, the dwelling of the deathless, bodiless Self; pleasure and pain touch only one who identifies with the body.
'The wind is bodiless; cloud, lightning and thunder, these too are bodiless. Just as these, rising up from that space yonder and reaching the highest light, appear each in its own form, ...'

Wind and thunder are real and powerful without a fixed body. The image helps us imagine a self that is real without being confined to a body.
Chandogya 8.12.2: Prajāpati gives an image from nature: wind, cloud, lightning and thunder are bodiless, and rise from space to reach the highest light in their own forms.

'... so this serene one, rising up from this body and reaching the highest light, appears in its own form. He is the highest person. There he moves about, eating, playing and enjoying himself with women, carriages or relatives, not remembering this appendage, the body. Just as a draught animal is yoked to a cart, so breath is yoked to this body.'
Meaning today and context
The body is pictured as a cart, with life yoked to it, and the Self as its owner, not the cart itself. Knowing this, one can use the body well without being defined by it.
Chandogya 8.12.3: completing the image, Prajāpati says the serene self rises from the body, reaches the highest light and appears in its own form as the highest person; breath is yoked to the body like a draught animal to a cart.

'Now, where the eye is turned toward space, there is the person in the eye; the eye is for seeing. The one who knows "let me smell this" is the Self; the nose is for smelling.
Meaning today and context
Behind every act of seeing, hearing and speaking there is the one who knows it is happening. That knower, not the senses or what they take in, is who we are.
Chandogya 8.12.4: Prajāpati explains that the Self is the knower behind the senses: the eye, nose, speech and ear are its instruments.

'The one who knows "let me think this" is the Self; the mind is its divine eye. With this divine eye, the mind, he sees these desires that are in the world of Brahman, and rejoices.'
Meaning today and context
Even thinking is something the Self knows, not what the Self is. The mind is a precious instrument, a 'divine eye'; we are the one who looks through it.
Chandogya 8.12.5: Prajāpati says the one who knows 'let me think this' is the Self; the mind is its divine eye, with which it sees and enjoys the desires in the world of Brahman.

'It is this Self that the gods worship. That is why all worlds and all desires are theirs. One who has found that Self and understands it gains all worlds and all desires.' So said Prajāpati; so said Prajāpati.

The teaching ends where it began: knowing the Self is the fulfilment of every desire. What we chase one thing at a time is already whole within.
Chandogya 8.12.6 closes Prajāpati's teaching: the gods meditate on this Self, and whoever knows it gains all worlds and all desires.
