8.8.1 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

'Look at yourselves in a pan of water, and whatever you do not understand about the Self, tell me.' They looked into the pan of water. Prajāpati asked them, 'What do you see?' They said, 'Sir, we see the whole of ourselves, a likeness right down to the hairs and nails.'

Meaning today and context

The teacher lets the students test their own understanding. They see a perfect reflection and mistake it for the Self.

Chandogya 8.8.1: Prajāpati tells Indra and Virocana to look at themselves in a pan of water; they say they see their whole selves, down to hair and nails.

8.8.2 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

tau ha prajāpatiruvāca sādhvalaṃkṛtau suvasanau pariṣkṛtau bhūtvodaśarāve'vekṣethāmiti | tau ha sādhvalaṃkṛtau suvasanau pariṣkṛtau bhūtvodaśarāve'vekṣāṃ cakrāte | tau ha prajāpatiruvāca kiṃ paśyatha iti ||

Prajāpati said to them, 'Adorn yourselves well, put on fine clothes, groom yourselves, and then look into the pan of water.' Having adorned themselves well, put on fine clothes and groomed themselves, they looked into the pan of water. Prajāpati asked them, 'What do you see?'

Meaning today and context

The test exposes the error: if the reflection changes with clothes and jewellery, can it be the unchanging Self?

Chandogya 8.8.2: Prajāpati tells them to dress up and adorn themselves and look again; they do so, and he again asks what they see.

8.8.3 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

tau hocaturyathaivedamāvāṃ bhagavaḥ sādhvalaṃkṛtau suvasanau pariṣkṛtau sva evamevemau bhagavaḥ sādhvalaṃkṛtau suvasanau pariṣkṛtāviti | eṣa ātmeti hovāca | etadamṛtamabhayametadbrahmeti | tau ha śāntahṛdayau pravavrajatuḥ ||

They said, 'Just as we two are well adorned, finely dressed and groomed, sir, so are these two well adorned, finely dressed and groomed.' 'That is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' And the two went away content at heart.

Meaning today and context

Both students leave satisfied too soon, having taken the body for the Self. Feeling settled about an answer is not the same as having understood it.

Chandogya 8.8.3: they say they see themselves adorned, as they are; Prajāpati repeats 'that is the Self', and both leave content.

8.8.4 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

tau hānvīkṣya prajāpatiruvāca | anupalabhyātmānamananuvidya vrajato yatara etadupaniṣado bhaviṣyanti devā vā asurā vā te parābhaviṣyantīti | sa ha śāntahṛdaya eva virocano'surāñjagāma | tebhyo haitāmupaniṣadaṃ provāca ātmaiveha mahayya ātmā paricaryaḥ | ātmānameveha mahayannātmānaṃ paricarannubhau lokāvāpnotīmaṃ cāmuṃ ceti ||

Watching them go, Prajāpati said, 'They are leaving without having grasped the Self, without having found it. Whoever follow this doctrine, gods or asuras, will come to ruin.' Virocana, content at heart, went to the asuras and taught them this doctrine: 'The self (the body) alone is to be glorified here, the self is to be served. Glorifying the self here and serving the self, one gains both worlds, this one and the next.'

The 'asura' view here means identifying oneself only with the body; it does not refer to any group of people. Caring for one's health and body is not condemned.

Meaning today and context

Virocana's doctrine is the belief that we are only the body and that serving its looks and comforts is the whole of life. Prajāpati warns that this view leads to ruin, however satisfying it feels.

Chandogya 8.8.4: Prajāpati, watching them go, says whoever follows this doctrine will come to ruin; Virocana goes back and teaches the asuras that the bodily self is to be glorified and served.

8.8.5 Upanishadic seer

tasmādapyaddyehādadānamaśraddadhānamayajamānamāhurāsuro bateti | asurāṇāṃ hyeṣopaniṣat | pretasya śarīraṃ bhikṣayā vasanenālaṃkāreṇeti saṃskurvanti | etena hyamuṃ lokaṃ jeṣyanto manyante ||

That is why, even today, people say of someone here who does not give, who has no faith and does not offer sacrifice, 'Alas, he is an asura!' For this is the doctrine of the asuras. They adorn the body of a dead person with food received as alms, with clothing and with ornaments, for they think that by this they will win that world.

'Asura' here names the body-centred view, not a group of people; do not use it to label anyone. Funeral customs described here are of their time; how families honour their dead is not being judged today.

Meaning today and context

Living only for the body tends to make a person ungenerous and without faith in anything larger. The text links stinginess and self-absorption to this mistaken view of the self.

Chandogya 8.8.5: the Upanishad explains that the ungenerous and faithless are still called 'asura', and that the asuras' custom of adorning corpses comes from this body-centred doctrine.
