8.7.1 Prajapati

'The Self that is free from evil, free from old age, free from death, free from sorrow, free from hunger and thirst, whose desires come true and whose intentions come true: that is what should be searched for, that is what one should seek to understand. One who has found that Self and understands it gains all worlds and all desires.' So said Prajāpati.

All our separate wants, for security, health, love and freedom from fear, point to one search. Prajāpati says it is the search for oneself.

Chandogya 8.7.1: Prajāpati, the lord of creatures, proclaims that the Self free from evil, age, death, sorrow, hunger and thirst must be sought, and that whoever knows it gains all worlds and all desires.

8.7.2 Upanishadic seer

taddhobhaye devāsurā anububudhire | te hocurhanta tamātmānamanvecchāmo yamātmānamanviṣya sarvāṃśca lokānāpnoti sarvāṃśca kāmāniti | indro haiva devānāmabhipravavrāja virocano'surāṇām | tau hāsaṃvidānāveva samitpāṇī prajāpatisakāśamājagmatuḥ ||

Both the gods and the asuras came to hear of this. They said, 'Come, let us seek that Self, by seeking which one gains all worlds and all desires.' So Indra set out from among the gods, and Virocana from among the asuras. Without consulting each other, the two came into Prajāpati's presence with fuel in their hands.

Coming 'with fuel in hand' was the sign of a humble student asking to be taught. Even the king of the gods had to come as a learner.

Chandogya 8.7.2: the narrator tells how the gods and the asuras heard Prajāpati's words; Indra for the gods and Virocana for the asuras went, each without telling the other, to Prajāpati as students.

8.7.3 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

The two lived the student life there for thirty-two years. Then Prajāpati asked them, 'Wanting what have you been living here?' They said, '"The Self that is free from evil, free from old age, free from death, free from sorrow, free from hunger and thirst, whose desires and intentions come true: that should be searched for, that one should seek to understand. One who has found that Self and understands it gains all worlds and all desires." People report these as your words, sir. Wanting that, we have been living here.'

The teacher waits thirty-two years before even asking the question. Real learning needs patience and readiness, not just curiosity.

Chandogya 8.7.3: after Indra and Virocana have lived as students for thirty-two years, Prajāpati asks why they came, and they repeat his own words about the Self.

8.7.4 Prajapati to Indra and Virochana

Prajāpati said to them, 'The person who is seen in the eye: that is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' 'Then, sir, the one that is seen in water and the one in a mirror, which is that?' 'It is this same one who is seen in all these surfaces,' he said.

Meaning today and context

Prajāpati points to the seer behind the eye, but the students hear 'the image in the eye'. We easily mistake what we see of ourselves for who we are.

Chandogya 8.7.4: Prajāpati gives his first teaching, 'the person seen in the eye is the Self'; the students take it to mean the reflection seen in water or a mirror.
