yadi manyase suvedeti daharamevāpi nūnaṃ tvaṃ vettha brahmaṇo rūpam | yadasya tvaṃ yadasya deveṣvatha nu mīmām̐syameva te manye viditam ||
If you think, 'I know it well', then surely you know only a small part of Brahman's form: that part of it which is you, and that part of it which is among the gods. So it must still be inquired into by you. (The student:) 'I think it is known.'

The moment we feel sure we have got the deepest truth, we have probably shrunk it to our own size. Keep inquiring; certainty about the infinite is a warning sign.
The teacher warns the student against thinking he has understood Brahman well; the student reflects and answers at the end, 'I think it is known.'
nāhaṃ manye suvedeti no na vedeti veda ca | yo nastadveda tadveda no na vedeti veda ca ||
I do not think, 'I know it well'; nor do I think, 'I do not know it'. I know, and yet... Whoever among us understands this saying, 'It is not that I do not know, and I do know', he knows it.

You cannot hold your own awareness like a possession, yet you are never without it. Knowing that you do not 'know' it as an object is itself a mature kind of knowing, free of both pride and despair.
The student, after reflection, explains his understanding: Brahman is neither something he knows as an object nor something wholly unknown to him.
yasyāmataṃ tasya mataṃ mataṃ yasya na veda saḥ | avijñātaṃ vijānatāṃ vijñātamavijānatām ||
It is known by the one to whom it is not known; the one to whom it is known does not know it. It is not understood by those who understand; it is understood by those who do not understand.

Humility is the doorway here. The person who stops trying to pin the truth down as one more idea is closer to it than the one who is sure he owns it.
The teacher states the paradox plainly: those who think they have grasped Brahman have not, and those who see it cannot be grasped as an object truly know it.
It is rightly understood when known in every awakening of awareness, for by this one finds immortality. Through the Self one gains strength; through knowledge one gains the immortal.

The Self is not found in some rare experience but in every moment of knowing: it is there in each thought and perception. Leaning on that steady awareness, rather than on changing circumstances, is a real source of inner strength.
The teacher says how Brahman is in fact known: as present in every act of awareness. This knowledge gives strength and immortality.
If one has known it here, then there is truth; if one has not known it here, great is the loss. Discerning it in each and every being, the wise, on departing from this world, become immortal.
'Great loss' is a call to seek understanding, not a judgement on anyone's life. 'Departing from this world' is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if someone is in crisis, help them reach care first (Tele-MANAS 14416).

This life is the place for the deepest understanding; there is no need to wait. And the test of that understanding is seeing the same reality in every being, which changes how we treat others.
The teacher closes the second section with urgency: this knowledge must be gained here, in this life.
