1.1 Disciple to Teacher

oṃ keneṣitaṃ patati preṣitaṃ manaḥ kena prāṇaḥ prathamaḥ praiti yuktaḥ | keneṣitāṃ vācamimāṃ vadanti cakṣuḥ śrotraṃ ka u devo yunakti ||

Willed by whom, sent by whom, does the mind fly to its objects? Yoked by whom does the first breath move? Willed by whom do people speak this speech? What god yokes the eye and the ear?

Meaning today and context

We use the mind, the senses and speech all day without asking what lies behind them. The Upanishad begins by turning attention around: who is it that sees, hears and thinks in me?

The Kena Upanishad opens with a student's question to the teacher: what is the power that sets the mind, breath, speech, eye and ear to work? The Upanishad takes its name from the first word, kena, 'by whom'.

1.2 Teacher to Disciple

śrotrasya śrotraṃ manaso mano yadvāco ha vācaṃ sa u prāṇasya prāṇaḥ cakṣuṣaścakṣuḥ | atimucya dhīrāḥ pretyāsmāllokādamṛtā bhavanti ||

It is the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind, the speech of speech; it is the breath of breath and the eye of the eye. Letting go of these, the wise, on departing from this world, become immortal.

'Departing from this world' is about knowing the Self, not an invitation to die. If someone is thinking about death or self-harm, listen and help them reach care first (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

Behind every sight, sound and thought there is the one who is aware of them. Recognising that you are this awareness, not just the busy mind or the tired senses, gives a steadiness that moods and events cannot take away.

The teacher answers: what moves the senses and mind is not another object but the awareness behind them, the ear of the ear and the mind of the mind.

1.3 Teacher to Disciple

na tatra cakṣurgacchati na vāggacchati no manaḥ | na vidmo na vijānīmo yathaitadanuśiṣyāt ||

There the eye does not go, nor speech, nor the mind. We do not know it, we do not understand how one could teach it.

Meaning today and context

The deepest things are not found the way we find facts. An honest teacher says so. This is not a dead end but an invitation to look at what is doing the looking.

The teacher admits that this reality cannot be reached by eye, speech or mind, and so cannot be taught like an ordinary object.

1.4 Teacher to Disciple

anyadeva tadviditādatho aviditādadhi | iti śuśruma pūrveṣāṃ ye nastadvyācacakṣire ||

It is other than the known, and it is beyond the unknown too. So we have heard from those of old who explained it to us.

Meaning today and context

What you are at the deepest level is not one more thing to know, nor a mystery kept from you. It is the knower itself, closer than anything known. The verse also honours the line of teachers through whom such insight is passed on.

The teacher continues, citing the tradition: Brahman is neither among the things we know nor among the things we do not know.

1.5 Teacher to Disciple

yadvācā'nabhyuditaṃ yena vāgabhyudyate | tadeva brahma tvaṃ viddhi nedaṃ yadidamupāsate ||

That which is not spoken by speech, but by which speech is spoken: know that alone to be Brahman, not this that people worship here.

'Not this that people worship' is not a rejection of worship or of other people's faith. It points beyond any object, including the ones we worship, to what is aware of them.

Meaning today and context

Words point, but the source of words is not one more word. The verse asks us not to stop at images and ideas of the divine, but to turn toward the awareness that makes all speaking possible.

The teacher begins a refrain of five verses: Brahman is not what is spoken but that by which speech speaks; it is not 'this' that people worship as an object.

1.6 Teacher to Disciple

yanmanasā na manute yenāhurmano matam | tadeva brahma tvaṃ viddhi nedaṃ yadidamupāsate ||

That which one does not think with the mind, but by which, they say, the mind is thought: know that alone to be Brahman, not this that people worship here.

Meaning today and context

You can watch your thoughts come and go, so you are not only your thoughts. When the mind is racing, remembering the awareness that knows the racing can give a little room and calm.

The refrain continues for the mind: Brahman is not a thought but that by which thinking is known.

1.7 Teacher to Disciple

yaccakṣuṣā na paśyati yena cakṣūm̐ṣi paśyati | tadeva brahma tvaṃ viddhi nedaṃ yadidamupāsate ||

That which one does not see with the eye, but by which one sees the eyes' seeing: know that alone to be Brahman, not this that people worship here.

Meaning today and context

We look outward for what is real, yet the one who sees is never among the things seen. The verse turns the search back to the seer.

The refrain continues for the eye: Brahman is not what is seen but that by which seeing happens.

1.8 Teacher to Disciple

yacchrotreṇa na śṛṇoti yena śrotramidaṃ śrutam | tadeva brahma tvaṃ viddhi nedaṃ yadidamupāsate ||

That which one does not hear with the ear, but by which this ear is heard: know that alone to be Brahman, not this that people worship here.

Meaning today and context

Every sound is known by something that is itself silent. Noticing that quiet knower is one way into calm in a noisy life.

The refrain continues for the ear: Brahman is not what is heard but that by which hearing is known.

1.9 Teacher to Disciple

yatprāṇena na prāṇiti yena prāṇaḥ praṇīyate | tadeva brahma tvaṃ viddhi nedaṃ yadidamupāsate ||

That which does not breathe by breath, but by which breath is led forth: know that alone to be Brahman, not this that people worship here.

This verse is about the source of life, not a breathing exercise or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Even life's most basic movement, breathing, happens within an awareness that does not itself come and go. The verse completes the list: speech, mind, eye, ear and breath all point to one source.

The refrain ends with breath: Brahman is not something that breathes but that by which breath itself is set moving.
