They thought, 'This victory is ours alone; this greatness is ours alone.' Brahman knew what they were thinking and appeared before them. They did not know what it was: 'What is this wondrous being?'

'It was all me' is the thought that blinds us. When we forget what supports our achievements, we fail to recognise the very source of our strength even when it stands in front of us.
The gods claim the victory for themselves. Brahman, seeing this, appears before them as a mysterious being, a yakṣa, which they cannot recognise.

It placed a blade of grass before him: 'Burn this.' He went at it with all his speed but could not burn it. He turned back from there: 'I could not find out what this wondrous being is.'

The fire that could burn the world cannot burn a blade of grass on its own. Our abilities are real, but they are not self-made; they rest on a power we did not create.

The second failure makes the point plain: no power, however great, works by itself. Recognising this is not weakness but the beginning of humility.
The Yakṣa sets down the blade of grass again; Vāyu cannot move it and returns defeated.
Then they said to Indra, 'Maghavan, find out what this wondrous being is.' 'So be it,' he said. He ran up to it, and it vanished from before him.

The greatest of the gods is not even granted a meeting. The truth withdraws from one who comes to it as a ruler; it is found by one who comes as a learner.
The gods send Indra, their king; as he approaches, the Yakṣa vanishes.
