Khaṇḍa 4

4.1 Narrator

sā brahmeti hovāca brahmaṇo vā etadvijaye mahīyadhvamiti tato haiva vidāñcakāra brahmeti ||

'It is Brahman,' she said. 'It was in Brahman's victory that you were glorying.' Only then did he know that it was Brahman.

Meaning today and context

The turning point is simple: seeing that what we called our own glory came from a deeper source. That recognition humbles us and, at the same time, connects us to that source.

Umā tells Indra that the being was Brahman, and that the gods' greatness came from Brahman's victory. Indra then understands.

4.2 Narrator

tasmādvā ete devā atitarāmivānyāndevānyadagnirvāyurindraste hyenannediṣṭhaṃ pasparśuste hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmeti ||

That is why these gods, Agni, Vāyu and Indra, stand as if far above the other gods: for they touched it most closely, and they were the first to know it as Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Even a failed encounter with the truth leaves a mark. Those who came close, though they did not yet understand, are honoured for it.

The narrator explains why Agni, Vāyu and Indra stand above the other gods: they came nearest to Brahman and were the first to know it.

4.3 Narrator

tasmādvā indro'titarāmivānyāndevānsahyenannediṣṭhaṃ pasparśa sa hyenatprathamo vidāñcakāra brahmeti ||

That is why Indra stands as if far above the other gods: for he touched it most closely, and he was the first to know it as Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Indra's greatness lies not in his power but in having asked, and so having been the first to understand.

The narrator explains why Indra stands above even Agni and Vāyu: he came nearest and was the first to know Brahman.

4.4 Teacher to Disciple

tasyaiṣa ādeśo yadetadvidyuto vyadyutadā itīnnyamīmiṣadā ityadhidaivatam ||

This is the teaching about it: that which flashed forth in the lightning, 'Ah!', which made the eye blink, 'Ah!'. This is with regard to the divine.

Meaning today and context

Brahman showed itself to the gods only for a moment, like a lightning flash that leaves us blinking in wonder. Moments of sudden awe can be glimpses of what is always there.

The teaching drawn from the story begins: an illustration of Brahman in nature, in the flash of lightning and the blink of an eye.

4.5 Teacher to Disciple

athādhyātmaṃ yaddetadgacchatīva ca mano'nena caitadupasmaratyabhīkṣṇam̐ saṅkalpaḥ ||

Now with regard to the self: it is as though the mind goes toward it, and by the mind one recalls it again and again; this is the mind's resolve.

Meaning today and context

Outside, Brahman flashes like lightning; inside, it is approached by turning the mind toward it again and again. Steady, repeated remembrance is the practice.

The teaching turns inward, to the self: Brahman is that toward which the mind moves and which it can recall again and again in reflection.

4.6 Teacher to Disciple

taddha tadvanaṃ nāma tadvanamityupāsitavyaṃ sa ya etadevaṃ vedābhi hainam̐ sarvāṇi bhūtāni saṃvāñchanti ||

It is called Tadvana, 'the beloved of all'. It should be meditated upon as the beloved. Whoever knows it thus, all beings long for him.

Meaning today and context

The highest reality is not cold or distant; it is what all beings most deeply love. One who lives from that love becomes, in turn, someone others are drawn to.

The teacher gives Brahman a name for meditation, Tadvana, 'the beloved', and says that one who knows it so is loved by all beings.

4.7 Teacher to Disciple

upaniṣadaṃ bho brūhītyuktā ta upaniṣadbrāhmīṃ vāva ta upaniṣadamabrūmeti ||

(The student:) 'Sir, tell me the secret teaching.' (The teacher:) 'The secret teaching has been told to you. We have told you the secret teaching about Brahman.'

Meaning today and context

We often wait for one more secret, one more technique. The teacher's answer is that the essential thing has already been said; what remains is to live with it.

The student asks the teacher for the secret teaching (upaniṣad); the teacher replies that it has already been given: the teaching about Brahman.

4.8 Teacher to Disciple

tasyai tapo damaḥ karmeti pratiṣṭhā vedāḥ sarvāṅgāni satyamāyatanam ||

Its foundation is austerity, self-restraint and work; the Vedas are all its limbs; truth is its dwelling place.

Tapas here means disciplined effort, not harsh austerity, fasting or harming the body.

Meaning today and context

Insight does not float free of how we live. Discipline, self-control and honest work give it ground to stand on, and truthfulness is where it lives.

The teacher names what supports this knowledge: austerity, self-control and right action as its foundation, the Vedas as its limbs, truth as its home.

4.9 Teacher to Disciple

yo vā etāmevaṃ vedāpahatya pāpmānamanante svarge loke jyeye pratitiṣṭhati pratitiṣṭhati ||

Whoever knows this thus, striking away evil, stands firm in the endless, highest heavenly world. He stands firm.

Meaning today and context

Knowing who we really are loosens the hold of past wrongs and gives a footing that does not shift. The repeated last word is the Upanishad's assurance.

The Upanishad closes with the fruit of this knowledge: freedom from evil and a firm place in the infinite.
